With one week remaining on its High Desert League schedule, the Bishop High varsity softball team improved its league mark to 6-2 with a 3-0 win over Mojave last Friday at the Bishop City Park. The Lady Broncos are now tied with Rosamond for second place in the HDL, with 8-0 Kern Valley leading the league.
Bishop is traveling to Kern Valley today for a 3:15 clash. “I was proud of all the girls (on Friday),” said Broncos coach Stacy Van Nest. “We’re now as ready as we can be for Kern Valley.” All the game’s scoring took place in the first two innings, as Bishop’s Kelsea Galvin opened the Bishop half of the first inning with a hit, moved to second on a dropped third strike, then was driven in by Alisha Tiner’s base hit. Tiner was replaced by courtesy runner Jessi Oney, who scored on a Chelsea Galvin triple. In the second inning, the Lady Broncos’ third and final score began when Jenny Baker had a base hit and stole second base, then Olivia Hartshorn’s fielder’s choice advanced Baker to third. Kelsea Galvin rapped her second base hit in as many innings to drive in Baker and end the day’s scoring. “And, we had a lot of pressure on them after those innings,” Van Nest said. “We had the bases loaded a few times and the only times we struck out was three times in the first inning.” Junior Tee-Ah-Ni Stone threw seven shutout innings for Bishop, striking out 16 and giving up just 1 hit and 2 walks. Offensively, junior second baseman Kelsea Galvin went 2-for-4 with an RBI and 1 score; junior first baseman Megan Mather and Tiner, the Broncos senior catcher, both batted 2-for-3, while Tiner also drove in a run; junior third baseman Chelsea Galvin smacked a triple in 2 at-bats for an RBI; senior left fielder Jenny Baker was a solid 2-for-2 and scored once; and senior shortstop Jazmin Rossi went 1-for-3. Van Nest noted that her defense, which had played down to her expectations in the past two games, played better against the Lady Mustangs. “I was very happy with the way the girls played,” she said. “We committed two errors, but not in the same inning. And, right fielder Sarah Brown made a nice throw to get a runner at second base, and Kelsea Galvin made three great plays at second base.” Bishop is now 13-8-1 overall. |
