When the Lone Pine High baseball team last played Mammoth back on April 1 the Eagles accumulated 20 runs. On Tuesday, Lone Pine equaled that offensive output in a 20-7 Desert Mountain League win at Mammoth. The Eagles were strong right off the bat, scoring 8 runs in the first inning and 5 in the second while allowing the Huskies just a single run in the second inning.
“We were pretty focused in the first and second innings,” said Lone Pine coach Dan Williams. “But when it was 13-1 we kind of lost that focus.” The Eagles’ offensive output did drop off, as they scored 1 run in the third inning, then 2 runs each in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, and gave up 6 runs to Mammoth in that time. Senior Jake Schill led the offense with a spotless 5-for-5 and 3 doubles; senior David Jones went 3-for-4 with a home run; Joe Ruiz, also a senior, batted 3-for-5 with “a nice home run over the left center field fence, about the same spot as David’s,” said Williams; junior Çhacho Serna went 3-for-6; senior Elder Rodriguez and sophomore Levi Whisler each batted 1-for-3; and Eddie Herrmann and Craig Bunn were 1-for-1, while Bunn reached base 4 more times on walks. Serna started on the hill for Lone Pine, giving up a run and striking out 4 in two innings; Whisler followed and threw three innings, allowing 6 runs and fanning 6; and Jones tossed the final two innings, shutting out the Huskies on no hits and 2 Ks. “You’ve got to hand if to Mammoth,” Williams said. “When they scored five runs (in the middle innings) they looked like they could play with anybody.” The Eagles now have sole possession of second place in the DML at 4-1, 10-3 overall. Lone Pine travels to Silver Valley, third in the DML, for a 3:15 p.m. game tomorrow. “This a must-win for Silver Valley to stay alive,” said Williams. “It’s also a must-win for us, and they’ll be coming at us with both barrels.” |
