The Bishop High varsity softball team committed too many errors and left too may runners on base en route to an 8-5 High Desert League loss at Rosamond on Tuesday. “We made nine errors, four fielding and five throwing, and that’s unusual for us, plus two passed balls,” explained Lady Broncos coach Stacy Van Nest. “And we left 10 runners on base; we’ll be looking to fix those problems.”
Junior Tee-Ah-Ni Stone pitched all six innings for Bishop, allowing just 2 earned runs on 7 hits, 2 walks and 10 strikeouts. “They (Rosamond) made contact more than any other team in the league,” said Van Nest. “But they were always late on her, there was a lot of right-field action.” Behind 2-0, the Lady Broncos tied the game at 2-2 in the second inning when catcher Alisha Tiner reached on an error, center fielder Chelsea Galvin walked and Stone got a base hit to load the bases. Shortstop Jazmin Rossi walked to score one, then right fielder Sarah Brown had a hit for Bishop’s second run of the inning. Senior Alisha Tiner (21), seen here in an earlier contest, was a big part of Bishop’s offense on Tuesday, but the Lady Broncos could not muster enough in their 8-5 loss at Rosamond. Photo by Gary Nickell Later, down 6-2 in the top of the fourth, the Broncos’ Amanda Fix reached via an error and advanced on a passed ball. Brown smacked her second base hit, then a hit by Kelsea Galvin loaded the bases. Megan Mather then drew a free pass to force in a run followed by a Tiner base hit for the second. Bishop had a chance in the top of the sixth, when Tiner led off by reaching base on an another error (the ‘Runners committed 7 in the game), Chelsea Galvin was hit by a pitch and Stone had a base hit to load the bags full of Lady Broncos with no outs. Jenna Sliger’s grounder was handled nicely by the Rosamond third baseman, who threw home for one out, and after another Bishop out, Galvin scored on a fielder’s choice. With Broncos on first and second the game ended on a ground out. Brown, a senior, led at the plate with a 2-for-4 day, including an RBI; Stone batted 2-for-3; junior first baseman Mather went 1-for-3; junior Chelsea Galvin was 1-for-2; and junior second baseman Kelsea Galvin and senior catcher Tiner were both 1-for-4, with Tiner adding an RBI. “They have this cinder infield and it took us a while to get used to it,” Van Nest noted on Bishop’s number of errors. “We’ll be looking forward to playing them up here (on May 8, the last scheduled game of the season).” Next up for Bishop (3rd place at 3-2, 10-8-1 overall) is a trip to Frazier Mtn. tomorrow, April 25 for a 3:15 p.m. league match-up.
