Jackie Zahner 1938-2008
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 22 at the Lone Pine Seventh-Day Adventist Church on the corner of Mt. View and Mt. Whitney streets for Jackie Zahner. All are welcome. Born in Missouri on May 19, 1938, Jackie Zahner died on March 6, 2008. Jackie had gone to the Lone Pine Hospital because he was not feeling well, and was transported to the Bakersfield Memorial Hospital where he passed away in the emergency room. Jackie came to Southern California at the age of 12 with his mother and grandfather. It was around this time of 1950 that Jackie gave his heart to the Lord and became a Christian, even though he had a hard childhood; perhaps this is what God used to draw him to Himself. He was a veteran, serving his country for two or three years in the Army around the early 1960s. For his career path, he again chose to serve his fellow man by taking care of the elderly both in a nursing home or hospital setting as well as privately in their homes. Gary Lenhart, who was a good friend of Jackie’s and knew him for 27 years, described Jackie as a man who loved the Lord sincerely, and would “give you the shirt off his back” if he could. Gary was ever-grateful to Jackie who took him in to live in his own home after Gary’s brother told him to leave. Even though Jackie himself was getting feeble and tired easily, he helped Gary move to Susanville by driving Gary’s second vehicle all the way up north. It was a hardship and his arms got tired, but he was willing to do it to help his friends. His favorite pastime was copying Scriptures by typing them up and then looking up the references. Among his favorite texts was John 3:16 and also Matthew chapters 27 and 28 which contain the crucifixion and resurrection stories. His friends say that he always talked about the Bible. These verses and chapters are also what Jackie would pray for everyone who hears or reads this eulogy to keep close to their hearts: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Though he never had any children, Jackie is survived by a brother, Dee of Hesperia; a niece in the Los Angeles area, who he was trying to get to move up to Lone Pine; and his two cats, Tiger and Aslan, which he considered to be his “kids.” Gary always laughs when talking about those cats because he called Tiger “monster” since he was always picking on Gary’s Bassett hound. His cat, Aslan, was named for the character that represented Jesus in the story “The Chronicles of Narnia.” He did this because Jesus was who he loved the most. |
