Lesta Rhea Hice 1919-2008
Graveside funeral services for Lesta Rhea Hice will be held today, March 4 at 11 a.m. at the West Line Street Cemetery with Pastor Rick Klug officiating. Born on Oct., 1919, in Paris, Ark., Lesta died at the Bishop Care Center on Feb. 29, 2008. Lesta was preceded in death by her husband, Homer, and her son, Melvin. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and James Core; son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Jill Hice; nine granchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Isbell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ruth Marie Parks 1931-2008
Per her wishes, no formal service are planned for Ruth Marie Parks. The family will celebrate her life privately. Born on Sept. 14, 1931, Ruth died on Feb. 26, 2008, succumbing to cancer at Southern Inyo Hospital. Ruth was born in Fullerton, a descendant of the Alcorns and a third-generation Owens Valley resident. She lived in Big Pine for more than 50 years. Ruth was an accomplished artist and enjoyed numerous outdoor activities throughout the valley. Her interests ranged from ATV riding, fishing on the Owens River and wandering on foot through the sage brush looking for historic relics. Throughout her life she kept active in the community by keeping score at baseball games, leading 4-H groups and consulting with high-school students to create artwork for proms and dances. She was a respected member of Gold Diggers and the American Legion Auxiliary. Ruth is survived by her companion of 30 years, Robert Harvey; her mother and step-father, Marie (99) and Lyle Rupert (97); her sons and their spouses, Lee and Barbara Cox, Larry Cox, and Billy and Windy Cox; her grandchildren, Geralee, Brian, Leah, Amity and Amy; and her great-grandchildren, Cody, Sierra, Brenen, Ryan, Justin and Hailee.
Vance R. Tomaselli 1947-2008
Full Fire Line-of-Duty Death services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 5 at Emmanuel Baptist Church at 28355 E. Baseline St. in Highlands for Captain Vance R. Tomaselli. Born in Ogden, Utah on June 21, 1947, Captain Tomaselli died on Feb. 21, 2008 at Loma Linda Hospital. He was 60. Captain Tomaselli suffered a stroke while en-route to a fire in San Bernardino on Feb. 16. Captain Tomaselli spent most of his 27-year fire service career at Station 15 in Angelus Oaks, where he lived and worked as a paid call captain. “Captain Tomaselli never hesitated to put his life on the line to save others,” said Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in a news release on Friday, Feb. 22. “His selflessness, dedication and courage in the face of danger reminded all Californians of the heroic acts performed by our firefighters to keep us safe. Maria and I express our deepest condolences to Captain Tomaselli’s loved ones and fellow firefighters as they mourn the loss of one of California’s finest.” Captain Tomaselli’s daughter, Caryn Todd, owns and operates Alpine Signs in Bishop. Due to her father’s death, she has been busy and the business has been closed. She plans to return to work following the March 5 funeral. Captain Tomaselli is survived by his daughter, Caryn Todd of Alpine Signs; son, Jim Tomaselli, superintendent of Del Rosa Hot Shots; granddaughter, Carlee Todd; and brother, Mike Tomaselli.
