The Bishop girls varsity basketball team faced a solid defense from first-place Rosamond, leading to low offensive output for the Lady Broncos in a 46-27 loss this past Tuesday at Rosamond.
"We were missing our best guard, Tashina Chavez, who tweaked a knee in practice, and we had trouble handling their full-court pressure,” explained Bishop coach Andy Holmes. The Broncos’ offensive woes were illustrated by a one-point second period and a 26-6 deficit at halftime. “In that second quarter we didn’t shoot very well. Their pressure really disrupted us, threw us out of sync,” Holmes said. Despite the loss, senior center Alyse Straub came away with an unusual “triple-double,” 10 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocks. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen 10 blocked shots,” Holmes said. “That’s a difficult thing to do in eight-minute quarters.” Senior forward/guard Kara Barlow followed with 8 points, and Tee-Ah-Ni Stone contributed 5 points and 6 rebounds. Holmes did, however, like one aspect of his team’s overall performance. “I particularly liked the way they came back in the second half, in fact, we won the second half, 21-20,” he said. “When you’re down by 20 points you sometimes have a tendency to let down, but they played hard the whole way. I’m very proud of them for that.” The Lady Broncos are now 1-4 in High Desert League play, while undefeated Rosamond is in first place. Bishop’s games scheduled for yesterday at Frazier Mountain were canceled, the next contest is Tuesday, Jan. 29 when Desert visits Bishop.
