The Big Pine boys basketball team earned a split in its Hi-Lo League opening weekend, beating Death Valley by forfeit on Friday and then losing to Baker on Saturday. The team plays a rematch with Baker on Friday night at home and is looking to avenge the loss.
“We were kinda lethargic and didn’t play well enough to win,” said Warriors head coach Darren Chirrick of the Baker game. “Not playing Death Valley on Friday hurt us.” Death Valley was unable to field a team due to illness, and that took some of the wind out of Big Pine’s sails. Having not played a game in a couple of weeks, the team got off to a very slow start at Baker. The Braves established a first-half lead and were able to hang on for the win. Big Pine made a furious comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring 19 points, but the team couldn’t overcome the deficit, losing 40-44. “We’re a pretty young team this year and are learning as we go,” said Chirrick. “Eventually we got it going and were excited to play them on Friday and show that we’re the better team.” The Warriors were happy to get Rusty Tillemans back from an ankle injury and Jon Erickson on the team as well. Along with youngsters Eric Birmingham and Colton Carrington, Big Pine now has a solid bench. Erickson led the team at Baker with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals. Sophomore Donave Butterbredt added 11 points. Chance Colvin had 7 points and 8 boards, and Tillemans chipped in with 3 points and 14 rebounds. Irving Thomas scored a bucket and hauled in 4 rebounds. Big Pine was supposed to travel to Lee Vining on Tuesday, but whiteout conditions postponed the contest. The Warriors tangle with Baker at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow night. The Lady Warriors start at 5 p.m.
