The Bishop boys were able to recover from a pair of deficits to win 3-2 at Frazier Mountain, while the Lady Broncos struggled against the Lady Falcons, falling 0-4. The two teams played last Saturday on a windy and cool day on the road.

The Bishop girls were not able to get untracked against Frazier. The two teams had battled into overtime the week before at the Garces Tournament, with the Lady Falcons winning 2-1 on a late OT goal. But on Friday in High Desert League play, Bishop just didn’t brings its A game. The Lady Broncos were snake-bit on set plays, with Frazier scoring on a pair of corner kicks and a free kick.
The game was tight in the first half, with Frazier taking a 1-0 lead. Bishop had a couple of goal-scoring opportunities, but the Lady Falcons’ goalkeeper was quick and made strong saves. Then in the second half, the Lady Falcons scored three goals to put the game out of reach, winning 4-0.
The Bishop girls have now played their two toughest HDL opponents on the road, and look forward to turning the tables at home later in the season.
Meanwhile, the Broncos played another exciting game and hung on for the win to improve to 4-0 in HDL play. Frazier, like Rosamond and Bishop, is one of the elite team’s in this year’s HDL. The Falcons jumped out early, playing with a lot of emotion on their home field.
Trailing 0-1, Bishop was able to tie the game at 1-1 when Chris Santana lofted a nice corner kick into the middle of the field that eluded the goalkeeper and found the back of the net.
Frazier came storming back to take a 2-1 lead midway through the first half, but the Broncos once again had the answer. Chris made a series of nice moves to draw defenders to him and then slotted a good pass to Hector Gonzalez. Gonzalez launched a strong shot to tie the game at 2-2.
Near the end of the first half, Bishop took its first lead of the day. This time Jiovanni Santana darted his way through the Falcons’ D, beating several defenders and drawing the keeper towards him. Jio dropped the ball off to Diego Gonzalez who buried his shot in the corner for the go-ahead goal.
The Broncos took a 3-2 lead into the half, and played very tenacious defense in the second 40 minutes. Bishop did a nice job controlling the ball, keeping its intensity high and not making mental errors deep in their defensive zone. Goalie Gardiel Santana had a strong game and made several nice stops.
With the big win, Bishop improved to 4-0-0 in HDL play, having beaten its toughest competition. Frazier dropped to 2-1-1 with the loss tied with 2-1-1 Rosamond. The Broncos will spend the vacation recovering from minor pulls and strains, and putting the polishing touches on their fitness and ball skills.
Both Bishop teams restart the HDL season on Tuesday, Jan. 8 when Kern Valley comes to town. The Lady Broncos play at 3 p.m. on the John Schwab Field with the boys following at 5 p.m.
In JV action, the Lady Broncos JV team had a strong weekend before the holiday break, beating a pair of teams in the Lancaster-Palmdale area. Bishop beat Little Rock High 5-0 and then beat Eastside High 4-0.
