Now is the time for local community members and businesses to step forward and lend a helping hand with the effort to help local cancer patients.
The Eastern Sierra Breast Cancer Alliance is preparing for its seventh annual 5K walk and 10K fun run fundraiser, and as the weather begins to cool and the leaves begin to turn, October is a great time to get out and run or walk for a good cause. The annual fun run and walk helps support ESBCA through sponsorship and entry fees. The ESBCA raises the money to provide cancer patients in Inyo and Mono counties with financial support as they struggle with life-threatening cancer. The ESBCA’s mission “is to help residents with cancer in Inyo and Mono Counties with resource information and financial aid whenneeded,” said ESBCA President Pat Ramirez. The Breast Cancer Alliance is a nonprofit, 501(c) (3) charity organization, and all donations made to the group are tax-deductible. As members plan the annual run fundraiser, they are seeking sponsorships from local businesses and individuals to help the run get on solid financial footing from the very start. “We are asking for a minimum sponsorship donation of $100,” Ramirez said. Some of the money donated for the event will be used to provide T-shirts and refreshments for runners and walkers, as well as help support the race, by providing course markers and cover other small costs that make the event possible. In return for sponsorship, businesses will receive a banner advertising the business displayed at the Bishop City Park during the day of the race. Also, each year the ESBCA creates a “colorful hankerchief” for cancer survivors. When the handkerchiefs are handed out the names of each business and individual which sponsored the annual fun run are mentioned. “This year alone, we have given close to $25,000 to those in need for rent, food and many other financial burdens one encounters when dealing with cancer,” Ramirez said. “With the loss of income these individuals face, their burden can be lessened with your support,” she added. In addition to help with rent and food costs while a local resident is fighting their personal battle with cancer, ESBCA is also a resource that helps to locate doctors, fund doctor appointments and mitigate gas costs for patients who must travel out of the area for medical care. “Our mission to continue helping those in the community with cancer is made possible through your strong support and commitment,” said Ramirez. So far this year, ESBCA has received financial support from Northern Inyo Hospital, Lisa and Ted Schade, High Country Lumber, Elks Lodge No. 1603, Coldwell Banker, Bishop Pediatric and Allergy, Schalcross & Associates, Black Gold Asphalt, Inc. and Union Bank. This year the annual ESBCA fun run will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20 in the Bishop City Park. There is a $25 entry fee for the race which will begin in the Bishop City Park, starting at 9 a.m. Registration forms are available at local hospitals, libraries and businesses. Every year, the ESBCA is able to raise approximately $10,000 with the fun run and walk. All workers at ESBCA are unpaid, dedicated volunteers. Every dollar raised through the event is donated directly to community members who are in need. Anyone who would like to volunteer to help out with the Seventh Annual Eastern Sierra Breast Cancer Alliance 5K walk/10K fun run, become a sponsor for the event, or donate a raffle prize may call (760) 920-8946 or (760) 872-4686. The deadline to sponsor the event is today, Tuesday, Oct. 2. |
