The Lady Warriors and Lady Broncos hooked up for a pre-league volleyball match on Tuesday with Bishop defending its home court with a 3-1 win.
Big Pine got off to a strong start, taking the first points of the match for a 3-1 lead. Alisha Tiner helped Bishop tie the game at 6-6 with strong serving. Then with Bishop leading 10-6, Callie Fronczak went on a tear, serving 9 points for a 19-7 lead. The Lady Broncos played excellent defense and were able to convert digs into spikes. Sarah Brown had three kills during the run.
Ann Moose helped Big Pine end the run with a smart tip for a point. Serena Davis also had a pair of nice hits, but Bishop pulled out game one 25-9.
Bishop took an early lead in game two on a nice block by Megan Mather, but Moose used well-placed serves, both short and deep, to pull the Lady Warriors to 9-13. Ruby Mojarro helped Bishop end the run by Big Pine by making a diving save. Doree Richards kept the pressure on, serving a trio of aces for Big Pine to make the score 14-13.
But Mather used a heavy float serve to give Bishop a cushion. The Lady Broncos setters did a great job pushing sets high and outside and allowing Bishop to take advantage of its height at the net. Mather gave Bishop a 20-13, but a great dig by Big Pine’s Davis led to a kill for Ana Bacoch to end the run. Bishop’s Felicia Harmon fired off the aces to end the match 25-15, Bishop.
In game three, however, Big Pine showed its grit and determination. The Lady Warriors pulled together as a team, got strong serves in, kept the rallies alive with some great digs and gutted out a 25-20 win.
Tiffany Frank got her team fired up with a great dig, and Grace McClenaghan fired off an ace to give Big Pine a 5-4 lead. A nice spike by Bacoch and another ace by Frank pushed the lead to 9-6. Tiner had a nice kill for Bishop, driving a spike down the line and then Sliger crushed a perfect set from Mather to pull Bishop to within 10-13. But the Lady Warriors shrugged off the big hit and won the next point. Moose came through with a great short ace, McClenaghan had a nice left kill over the block, and Davis came up with a diving dig for a point and a 16-13 Big Pine lead. Davis had another big kill at 22-16 with the Lady Warriors taking game three 25-20.
In the fourth game, the Lady Warriors seemed to let down. Big Pine struggled with its serving, giving Bishop too many opportunities to score. Sliger gave Bishop a boost with an opening block and Mather served the Lady Broncos to a 6-1 lead. Then Harmon went on a strong serving run, tallying 9 points with 5 aces. Frank tried to end the run with a great spike, but Harmon returned the favor with a sprawling back-row dig. Tiffany Wilson came through for Big Pine with a big block and save over the net, but Bishop’s Ely Muro was strong on the other side of the net and killed the ball. Kelsea Galvin served a  pair of aces to keep Bishop driving, and Desi Cheuvront ended the game with an ace, 25-7 Bishop.
Both teams showed glimpses of what they’re capable of in the match. Big Pine played very solid defense and got great setting by Moose. The Lady Warriors will have strong play at the net in the Hi-Lo League and as the young team matures, will bring the consistency needed to win close games.
The Lady Broncos got their offense going with great passes, good sets and smart attacks. Brown led the team with 9 kills. Kim Miller, Muro and Fronczak added 3 each. Mather had 5 blocks with Muro and Sliger adding 3 each. Mather had 7 assists on the night as fellow setter Fronczak added 8. Galvin led the team with 4 digs with Tiner and Brown sprawling for 3 each.  Harmon served 7 aces and scored 11 points in the game. Mather had 5 aces and 15 points.
In the JV game, Bishop beat Big Pine 25-20 and 25-13. Jessica Biehl led Bishop in game one with 8 service points. In game two Carlie Todd rang up 9 aces and 14 points on serve. Katie Manuelito led the team with 4 kills, Todd added 3 and Lakota Mikulicich and LaVare Chavez each had 3. Michelle Case had 3 digs.
