Each year amateur photographers flock to Inyo County for opportunities to shoot the majestic Sierra and barren deserts of Death Valley. Now, Lone Pine is offering a reward for the best shots.
The Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce is hosting a summer-long photo contest for amateur photographers who have been shooting in Inyo County. The deadline to enter the Inyo County Amateur Photo Shoot-out Contest is Sept. 30, and there is a limit of three photos per contestant.
There are two categories for contest participants: adult and high school students. Prizes for adult contestants are $100 for third place, $200 for second place and $500 for first place. The high school student category has a $200 prize.
Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kathleen New said that she has been receiving a diverse array of photos in the adult category, but has yet to see any shots from high school students thus far.
Photographs that are submitted will be displayed during the 2010 Lone Pine Film Festival this October. Photographs selected for the contest will be judged Oct. 8-9 by vote of festival attendees.

Contest winners will be announced Sunday at the campfire meeting after the film festival.
The Chamber of Commerce will also have ribbons for several different categories: animals, action, people, landscape and more.
New said that submissions thus far have been primarily scenic shots.
“Mostly, we’ve received photos of the Alabama Hills,” New said. “I’ve talked to one person who said they were getting some shots up in Bishop. Death Valley has also been huge.”
There will be a $5 entry fee for the photographs submitted for the adult category of the contest, payable with delivery of the photograph to the Chamber. There will be no fee for the high school student category. Fee is payable only by cash or check. Checks should be made out to the Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce.
Each selected photo must have the contestant’s name, address and phone number clearly printed directly on the back of each submission.
All photos submitted for the contest become the property of the Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce and may be used for advertising. New said that she hopes to use some contestant photos for Lone Pine’s annual visitor’s guide.
The idea to host a community-wide, summer-long photography contest came from the Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors’ desire to create a program that would appeal to a diverse group of residents and visitors, and encourage them to visit Inyo’s scenic sites year-round.
In its first year, New said that the contest has taken off, with an overwhelming number of submissions coming in over the past few weeks.
The program is funded through a $6,000 Inyo County Advertising Community Resources Grant.
New said that she hopes to make the amateur photographers contest an annual event for residents and visitors, and hopes to be able to expand the program to include regular spring and fall bird-watching tours to promote photographers to get out and see some of the area’s wildlife.
Plans for the bird watching tours are preliminary, she said, but the Chamber hopes to have that program rolling by this fall, when the birds begin their migration.
Anyone who would like to submit a photo or get more information on the contest is invited to call the Chamber at (760) 876-4444.
