Healthy Communities of Inyo County is hoping to stave off the effects of time on local residents by bringing back its popular Family Fun in the Park series next week. The program, for toddlers to youth ages 12, begins on Tuesday, July 20 from 10 a.m.-noon at Spainhower Park in Lone Pine and continues every Tuesday until August 24. The setting for a children’s program could not be better as the Inyo County Parks and Recreation crew maintains a beautiful and well-maintained public park which is the perfect place for children to play. Program Coordinator Marisol Macias-Luna, who is also a licensed child care provider, oversees this fun-filled program. According to Healthy Communities’ Program Director Charles James, “Marisol is a bit of an expert when it comes to taking care of small children. There are so few programs for young children in our communities during the summer and Family Fun in the Park fills a need. Although we are starting three weeks later than usual and had to cut back to one day rather than two, we are determined to offer this activity.”
James went on to note that Healthy Communities has a wonderfully supportive partner in McDonald’s of Lone Pine. Owners Lis and Kevin Mazzu are stepping up again this summer to support the program by providing healthy snacks and drinks. Luna is also well-versed in both English and Spanish, which makes participation much easier for Spanish-speaking families. Exercise, arts and crafts and other activities help to further a child’s mental and physical growth. A new theme is presented each week. Bear Camp will highlight fun and safety when camping with the family. Setting up tents, cooking S’mores, learning to “hug a tree” if lost are just a few of the activities planned. Another theme will be “Waterworld,” where kids learn to be safe around water – and still have fun. Arts and crafts from finger-painting to glue and glitter are provided for participants. There is also developmental play, table games, board games, books and a healthy snack and beverages.
