Field of hopefuls for June Primary election grows E-mail

The election is four months out and there is still another week before candidates can officially file for their candidacy, but the June 8 Primary Election is already shaping up to have a full ballot.
Since the filing period opened Jan. 4, 19 potential candidates have picked up their Petitions in Lieu of Filing Fees – usually seen as a first step in running for public office.
The petition process, which consists of hopefuls gathering voter signatures, is a chance for potential candidates to test constituency waters before filing official Declarations of Candicacy, which place their names on the ballot.
The latest news to come out of Independence is that retiring City of Bishop Administrator Rick Pucci has taken out papers for the Inyo County Board of Supervisors, Third District, challenging Karen Ball Summers and incumbent Beverly Brown.
Incumbent District Attorney Art Maillet now has a challenger as well, as Bishop attorney Gerard Harvey and former public defender has taken out a petition to run for the post.
And, longtime County Clerk-Recorder Mary Roper will not be seeking re-election. She is instead lending support to her longtime assistant in her bid for the seat.
In a press release she stated, “My decision was made easier by my confidence that Assistant Clerk-Recorder Kammi Foote has the knowledge and experience that will enable the County Clerk-Recorder’s office to continue with its excellent reputation for public service.” Also running for that position is Della Merie Hannah.

Superior Court Judge Dean Stout has filed Declaration of Intent papers, as required by any person running for a judicial position, but has not yet taken out a petition. According to Foote, Stout is the only person to file Intent papers.
Other candidates who have taken out Petitions in Lieu of Filing Fees since mid-January include: Jackie Conaway for 25th Congressional District, a seat currently held by Representative Buck McKeon; and Clyde Reyburn and Patricia Wilder for the office of Public Administrator, currently held by Patricia Barton.
Many incumbents are so far running unopposed, including Inyo County Superintendent of Schools Terry McAteer, First District Supervisor Linda Arcularius, Assessor Tom Lanshaw, Coroner Leon Brune, Auditor Leslie Chapman and Sheriff Bill Lutze.
The first day that any candidate for any office can file a Declaration of Candidacy is Feb. 16.
