Although born and raised in Lone Pine, some of Leslie’s fondest memories as a young boy were traveling on horseback all over the Eastern Sierra with his grandfather, Skidoo George. Leslie spent part of his youth growing up in Death Valley during the construction of Scotty’s Castle and some seasonal living on the hay ranches in Fish Lake Valley. He grew up with a love of camping, fishing and hiking that carried on into his adult life.
Leslie served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S. NAS Kaneohe as a seaman first class from March 25, 1944 to April 16, 1946. When he returned home, he married the love of his life, Irene Hackett, in July of 1947 and they started their family. Leslie continued his love of hiking, fishing and camping with the Boy Scouts, and he enjoyed rock hunting and searching for crystals with his pal “Little Joe.”

Leslie loved working on cars, building furniture and anything he could do with his hands. Leslie was the all-around “Handyman.” He also loved gathering pine nuts and playing his favorite “Texas Tea” machine at the Paiute Palace. Most of all, he enjoyed spending most of his time with his family.
Leslie was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and his only daughter, Patricia (Button) Ross.
Leslie is survived by his wife of 63 years, Irene; sons and daughters-in-law, Eugene and Joanne, Richard and Rose and Roger, all of whom are from Lone Pine; grandchildren, Barbara and Michael Button, Jerry Ross, Jr., Jennifer Naylor and husband Ross, and Christina, James, Johnny and Clifford Button; and 14 great-grandchildren, three sisters-in-law, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and many long-time friends.
