Evelyn Frances Taylor
1916-2010

A grave side service will be held at 11 a.m. at the Mono Lake Cemetery with a 3 p.m. memorial service and reception to follow at the Big Pine Methodist Church on Saturday for Evelyn Frances Taylor, formerly Evelyn Davis.
Born May 29, 1916 in Ingersoll, Alfalfa County, Okla., Evelyn died Jan. 22, at the Renown Medical Center in Carson City with her daughter Mary Jane and grandson Greg Snyder at her side. She was 93.
Born in Oklahoma to Julian and Iva Jane Hendricks, she was raised on her parent’s large farm near Cherokee, Okla., then arrived in Whittier as a teenager with the rest of her family. She and her siblings loved spending their free time dancing to the big bands at many famous dance halls in Southern California. She moved to Inyo County at the tender age of 19 to work as a waitress at Glacier Lodge and later helped cook and serve food for the Patridge family at their pack station on Big Pine Creek where she would meet her future husband, Albert Davis. They both loved to dance and attended the “Old Time Dances” for many years. They married Oct. 3, 1937 and in November 1941 they moved to Birch Creek west of Bishop where Albert became a caretaker for Southern California Edison, later SCE. They were snowed in all winter and used snowshoes to go to town, carrying their first child in a knapsack. They lived at most of the plants on Bishop Creek until about 1946 when they moved to Rush Creek Power Plant on the June Lake Loop.

They raised their four children and remained there until Albert retired. During those years Evelyn was active, holding offices in Eastern Star and Rebecca lodges and the PTA. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and throughout the years she was a member of Lee Vining Presbyterian Church, Big Pine Methodist Church and Dutch Flat Presbyterian Church.
The farm girl in her enjoyed raising chickens, rabbits, goats and an occasional lamb. She also enjoyed fishing and hunting with the entire family. Albert taught Evelyn to enjoy hunting and fishing as much as he did and her first Mule deer rack still remains the largest in the family! For many years the highlight of each Fall was a get-away fishing and deer, elk and moose hunting trip with Jack and Barbara Murphey and Bob and Clara Calhoun, all of Lee Vining.
Evelyn retired to Big Pine after Albert’s long career with Cal Electric and SCE where they lived until Al’s death in 1982. Evelyn continued living in Big Pine and married Kurt Leuschner of June Lake in 1987. After Kurt’s death in 1988 she married Ernie Taylor of Dutch Flat. She and Ernie lived in Big Pine and Dutch Flat until his death in 2003. Due to Muscular Degeneration and a heart condition, Evelyn lived her last years in an assisted-living facility in Gardnerville and Carson City. She will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends.
Evelyn is survived by her three daughters, Frances and husband Ed Fortney, Shirley and husband Dave Bauer, Mary Jane and husband Robert Snyder and her pride and joy, son Bill Davis and his wife Patti. She had 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many, many friends.
Donations in memory of Evelyn can be made to the National Federation of the Blind, 5928 S. Land Park Dr. Sacramento, 95822 or to the American Heart Association.
