All residents have to do to show support for local cancer patients is get out and get a little exercise next weekend with the Eastern Sierra Breast Cancer Alliance.
The ESBCA is preparing to host its ninth annual fundraising walk/fun run at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 in the Bishop City Park
The ESBCA hosts this fundraiser each year to help support Eastern Sierra residents who are struggling with any kind of cancer.
“This is the only fundraiser organized by ESBCA to sustain us through the coming year in our efforts to distribute to those in dire need,” said ESBCA Board Member Ian Lindsay.
Over the years the ESBCA has distributed more than $200,000 to local citizens in need of financial support for food, medical treatments, transportation or more.
In addition to the popular race, the ESBCA will be providing refreshments for participants and will be auctioning off a quilt donated by residents Debbie Earls, Barbara Stuhan and Kay Smith, as a race-day raffle to help the ESBCA provide crucial aid to local cancer patients.
Raffle tickets for the quilt are available at Cobwebs store in South Main Street in Bishop. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5.

The 5K/10K walk/fun run begins at the Bishop City Park and follows a circular course along the Bishop canal and back to the park.
“This is the right time of year, it’s sort of cool weather right now and it’s nice out,” Lindsay said. “Many people take their dogs with them on the run, and this year we’ll have water for them, because the poor things get thirsty too.”
Each  year the ESBCA fun run generates about $8,000 for the organization.
“We help those who have cancer, any cancer, not just breast cancer,” Lindsay said. “We help people who need tests or money for gas. We help alleviate some of that stress.”
Lindsay, a cancer survivor himself, said that many residents who are struggling with the cost of medical bills and the cost of transportation to and from treatment, “think they are going to die just because of how much some of this stuff costs.”
The ESBCA will also be receiving matching funds from the Sydow-Hedani Family in memory of  their daughter and sister “Elizabeth,” who succumbed to cancer.
“ESBCA is extremely grateful to have this family’s ongoing support over the years,” said Board Member Pat Ramirez.
Registration forms for this year’s event will be available at Northern Inyo Hospital, local libraries and on ESBCA’s Web site, www.esbca.com. Anyone who pre-registers will be guaranteed an event shirt.
Those who wish to pre-register may do so from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Northern Inyo Hospital.
