Aurora Toledo of Big Pine made the long drive to Fort Hall, Idaho with her family on Wednesday, Aug. 5 to attend the 46th Annual Shoshone Bannock Festival. The drive was well worth it in the end. Toledo’s plans were to dance at the Pow Wow and support her older cousin Bailee Piper, the reigning Junior Miss Big Pine Paiute Tribe for 2008-09, in the children’s and festival parades. However, her family talked Toledo into signing up for the Festival Princess Title. On Thursday, Aug. 6, Toledo and 27 other girls from all over the U.S. and Canada danced two contest songs and awaited the decision of the five judges. After the tabulations were complete, 2008-09 Miss Shoshone Bannock Queen Leela Abrahamson crowned Toledo the 2009-10 Shoshone Bannock Festival Little Princess.
Toledo is 9 years old and a proud member of the Big Pine Paiute Tribe of the Owens Valley. She is the daughter of Fawn Piper and Greg Toledo of Big Pine; the granddaughter of Robert Piper Sr. of Big Pine, Lynda Charlie of Bishop and Aurora and Arturo Toledo of La Palma Michoacán, Mexico; and the great-great-granddaughter of Margie Piper of Big Pine. Toledo said she loves her family very much and would like to thank them for all the hugs and encouraging words. She is in the fourth grade at Pine Street Elementary, and has been dancing the Fancy Shawl and Jingle Dress styles for four years. She loves traveling to pow wows and said she is very proud to be representing this great event that not only includes one of the largest pow wows in Indian Country, but also softball tournaments and all-Indian rodeo. Toledo will hold the title of Sho Ban Festival Little Princess for one year, after which she will return to the Fort Hall reservation in 2010 to crown her successor.
