Almost two months following the close of its successful 2008-09 season, the BCCA will host the acclaimed Studio Singers of Long Beach City College live in concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Bishop Union High School Auditorium. The show marks a sixth, “bonus” concert for the BCCA and will be offered free to the local community and visiting public.
According to the BCCA, The Studio Singers will present “an evening of beautiful and fun jazz and pop vocal music,” under the direction of Tom Dustman, professor of Music at Long Beach City College. This select company of highly talented singers are auditioned each semester to form one of the country’s premier college singing groups. The Studio Singers, according to Long Beach City College, are made up of musicians from all over the U.S. as well as many international students (Japan, Dominican Republic, South America, Mexico, Sweden). To date, The Studio Singers have recorded 14 CDs. As their reputation grew, the group began to perform locally as well as tour throughout the state. In addition to their annual Spring Tour, they also perform at the “Holiday Concerts” in December and the “Spring Thing” in May. They have also performed for the Music Association of California Community Colleges, The American Choral Directors Association and the International Association of Jazz Educators. Each semester, The Studio Singers, along with The Evening JazzChoir and several other small performing groups, created by Dustman, perform a two-night concert series in the Long Beach City College Auditorium. Dustman attended both Miami and Bowling Green universities (Ohio) and has a Bachelor of Music Education and Master’s in Applied Performance. At Long Beach City College, Dustman conducts jazz choirs and small performing ensembles and also teaches contemporary vocal performance (solo voice class). He is also an adjudicator and clinician for jazz festivals throughout the U.S. and Canada. In addition to his college responsibilities, Dustman is the artistic director and bass singer for the professional vocal group Beachfront Property.
