By Mike Bodine Register Staff 4-11-2009 Another traffic accident has occurred near Northern Inyo Hospital, at the intersection of West Line Street and Pioneer Lane. Bishop police are reporting that on Tuesday afternoon, Lisa Perkins, 50, of Bishop, was struck while crossing Pioneer Lane between NIH and the Bishop Care Center. Evidently, Martha Jeffs, 82, of Bishop, was traveling eastbound on West Line Street and turned into Pioneer Lane, hitting Perkins. Perkins was transported to NIH by Symons Ambulance with what were described as “non-life threatening” injuries. That particular intersection has been “drawn to my attention,” said Bishop Police Chief Kathleen Sheehan, and not by just this particular incident. Problems with sight distance, especially when trying to pull out of Pioneer onto West Line, have been a safety issue for years.
Sheehan was instrumental in getting Caltrans to add red-curbing/no-parking limitations along the north side of West Line adjacent to NIH in March. In fact, some 17 parking spots were sacrificed to the red curb to increase the line of sight for motorists and pedestrians. However, Sheehan said, “We’re not sure if sight distance was a factor in this case.” She explained the line-of-sight problems are usually associated with traffic pulling out of Pioneer onto West Line – not the other way around. While she said the “issue isn’t connected” to this accident, she did say that a traffic light at the intersection would probably have lessened the chances of this or other accidents from happening.
