Register Staff 3-21-2009 Lone Pine and the other three schools in Desert Mountain League track and field competition caught a look at one another Wednesday at Boron. The host Bobcats and the Desert Christian Knights are the top teams of the league, but Lone Pine’s Golden Eagles are scoring points in nearly every event they enter.
The boys’ varsity sprint relay team chopped three seconds off their time, just by making better baton passes after another week of practice. That was good for second place in an event where Lone Pine used to get crushed. Senior thrower Samantha Gordon confirmed her place among the league’s best lady shot putters; her career best of 26’ 11” took second place. Gordon doubled back to win the 3200-meter run, but her time of 16:05 leaves plenty of room for improvement, according to Lone Pine coach Jeff Putman. Sophomore Dylan Lienemann tied his career bests in the mile and 800-meter races, a good sign this early in the season. Senior Kaoru Mullenhour continued his sprint to fame, placing second in the 100-meter dash in a photo-finish and then exacting revenge an hour later by winning the 200-meter dash in a romp against the same field. For the second week in a row, his times were both career bests. Sophomore miler Sawyer Entwistle lowered his personal best to 5:32, good for third place in the middle of a cloud of fast, blue Desert Christian jerseys. Lone Pine travels next to a High Desert League meet at Rosamond High School on Thursday, March 26.
