By Kellie Caparula Sports Staff 10-16-2008 The Warriors volleyball team played well in a close, three-game loss to Mojave in non-league play on Tuesday. Big Pine gave Mojave all they could handle in the first two games but lost their intensity in the final game and the Mustangs were able to dominate. The first game seemed like it would be an easy night for Mojave as the Mustangs jumped out to 12-7 lead. But the win was far from easy for Mojave. Big Pine turned up its level of play and was able to cut the score to 22-23.
But Mojave was able to gain control and win 26-24. “We started to work together and stay with them,” said Warriors head volleyball coach Renee Davis. The momentum Big Pine had in the first game carried over to the second with the Warriors taking a 13-7 lead. Mojave quickly cut into that lead, going on a 5-1 run to make the score 14-12. Big Pine wasn’t able to handle the powerful spikes by Mojave, which allowed the Mustangs to tie the game at 21. The Warriors would misjudge several balls and let them fall just barely in bounds. It cost Big Pine the game as they lost 22-25. In the final game the Warriors seemed lackluster as the Mustangs were energized and dominated from beginning to end. Mojave served well and was able to stop any Big Pine attacks, taking the game 25-15. “We just got a little unfocused,” Davis said of her team’s performance in the last game of the match. The Warriors will go to Trona Friday.
