Fans of classical music – or rather, pure instrumental sound at its finest – will want to check out the Tuesday, Oct. 21 performance of the Italian Saxophone Quartet at Bishop Union High School. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Dorothy Joseph Auditorium, and audiences can expect to hear selections from an impressive repertoire that range from Bach and Mozart to Joplin, Gershwin and even Cole Porter.
The Italian Saxophone Quartet formed in 1982, bringing together four of the most established soloists in their field: Federico Mondelci (sax soprano), Marco Gerboni (alto sax), Mario Marzi (tenor sax) and Massimo Mazzoni (sax baritono). In 1984 and 1985, they won several chamber music competitions and in particular, were awarded first prize in the “Premier Ancona” by Goffredo Petrassi. Their interpretations of contemporary music have received special recognition and, according to the group, this is an area of the repertoire that the Quartet have continued to promote in their concert activities. The Italian Saxophone Quartet have performed extensively, giving more than 400 concerts in the Italy, U.S., Japan, Greece, Germany, France, Russia, Lebanon and Sweden. Alongside their performances in the major concert halls throughout Italy, Europe, Russia and the U.S., the Quartet have frequently broadcast on radio and recorded three CDs, including a CD on the Pentaphon label devoted to contemporary music. For more information on next Tuesday’s concert, tickets or membership to the Bishop Community Concert Association, call Membership Chairman Mary Mae Kilpatrick at (760) 873-6690.
