The Warriors beat Lighthouse Christian of Santa Monica, 36-18, which was ranked No. 5 when the team’s matched up, but have dropped two spots since the game. Despite the score the game was close in the first half. The Warriors fell behind 6-0 in the first quarter but caught up when Chance Colvin scored for Big Pine giving them an 8-6 lead. Both teams were hurt by penalties, every time either side had an advantage a yellow flag would stop their progress.
But penalties weren’t the only thing that stood in the Saints way. The Warriors once again brought their suffocating defense, having seven players in double digits in tackles. Big Pine worked on tackling all week in practice so they could stop Lighthouse Christian’s running game, said Big Pine coach Mark Tillemans. “We were getting three or four heads in on every tackle,” Tillemans said. But the Saints eventually broke through at the end of the half. With about 15 seconds left in the half the Warriors decided to go for a first down.
Colvin would get tackled, but the referee didn’t call him down and the Saints picked up the fumble and scored and took a 12-8 lead at the half. The play was risky, admitted Tillemans, but said in 8-man football a team can “strike at anytime” and that’s why he went for it. But at halftime the team’s heads were up and they didn’t let the questionable call get them down. “One missed call wasn’t going to lose the game,” Tillemans said. It was obvious Big Pine didn’t get too caught up by the call, Rusty Tillemans would run the ball in for a touchdown in the third quarter, and Big Pine recaptured the lead. The Warriors kept up their defensive intensity in the second half. Every time Lighthouse Christian got into scoring position Big Pine shut them down. In the fourth quarter the Warriors wasted no time scoring, with less than three seconds off the clock Chance Colvin ran the ball in for a touchdown. With the win Big Pine moves to 5-0 and remains on top of the CIF poll. The Warriors aren’t feeling the pressure from their winning streak, Tillemans said. “All we’re worried about is the next opponent,” Tillemans said. Big Pine has a lot to concentrate on for next week, playing No. 3 Trona in Trona Friday night. “We couldn’t be more excited to be going to Trona Friday night,” Tillemans.
