Monday, Jan. 5

Swearing In 
The swearing in for recently elected officials will be held at noon in the top floor of the Inyo County Courthouse in Independence. A reception will follow in the court foyer. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. 

Tuesday, Jan. 6

Attention Adult Skiers
Home Street Middle School in Bishop is in desperate need of volunteer ski instructors for its ski program which begins Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009.  This involves committing to a one-day clinic and then one day a week (instructing at Mammoth Mountain) during the season which runs from Jan. 6 through April 2. Those who are interested or have questions are asked to contact Scott Piercey at 872-3651 or Kristin Carr at 872-1381.
 
BCWA Meeting
The meeting of the Bishop Creek Water Association scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 2 has been cancelled. The next regular meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009 in the DWP building at 300 Mandich in Bishop. For more information, call Bob Prendergast at 873-0209.
 
Dog Licenses/Clinics
Inyo County has announced its annual Dog Licensing and Rabies Vaccination Clinics for 2009. A clinic will be held today in Independence from 2-6 p.m. at the fire station. In addition, licenses are due Jan. 1 of each year and are delinquent after Feb. 3, 2009. For more information, call 873-7852.
 
Sliders Membership Drive
During the month of January the Eastern Sierra Sliders reining club will be holding its 2009 membership drive. Membership forms and the 2009 Class List are available. Forms may be obtained at local feed stores or by calling Happy Nelson at (760) 872-2034.

NIH Auxiliary Workshop
The Northern Inyo Hospital Auxiliary will hold a workshop at 9 a.m. in the Hospice building. All members and their friends are encouraged to attend and bring ideas for crafts that will be made for the fall boutique. Any questions, call Shirley Stone at 872-1914.

Tribal Meeting
The Bishop Tribal Council will be holding a General Council meeting at 10 a.m. at the new Community Center at 405 N. Barlow Ln. Tribal members are welcome to submit items for the agenda at the Tribal Office until 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8.
 
GOP Women Meet
The monthly meeting of the Inyo County Republican Women Federated (serving Inyo and Mono counties) will meet at 11:30 a.m. at Whiskey Creek restaurant in Bishop. For more information or to make reservations for lunch, call Hospitality Chairwoman Elaine at 873-5164.

Lower Vine Tours
Starting today through Saturday, April 11, 2009, Lower Vine Ranch hiking tours are scheduled every Friday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Lower Vine Ranch, in Death Valley National Park, was the actual residence of Walter Scott, aka Death Valley Scotty. Tours are limited to 15 participants and advance reservations may be made by calling Death Valley National Park at (760) 786-2392 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. A limited number of first-come, first-served tickets may be available. All proceeds will benefit the interpretive and education program at Scotty’s Castle.
 
Elks TGIF Dinner
The Bishop Elks Lodge will be serving TGIF at the Lodge at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening will be chicken cordon bleu, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetable, salad, roll and dessert. All Elks and their guests are invited. For more information, call Kathy at 873-3221.

VFW Ladies Breakfast

Reading Group Meets
All readers are welcome to attend the January meeting of the Bishop Classics Reading Group at the Bishop Library at 6:30 p.m. The group will begin reading works in the modern period and reading and discussion will focus on the four Gospels. In particular, the discussion will attempt to understand the contributions of early Christianity to modern social, political and cultural thought. The Bishop Elks Lady Bills are presenting the Murder Mystery Dinner, “Death in Them Thar Hills,” at 6:30 p.m. The evening’s menu will consist of barbecued pork ribs, beans, corn, salad, roll and dessert. Monday, Jan. 19

CCCC Spring Semester
Cerro Coso Community College’s Spring 2009 semester will begin Jan. 19, 2009. The college is offering day, evening, and online classes. A full class schedule is now online at www.cerrococo.edu where students may also register anytime. On-campus regular registration is currently being conducted now through the week of Jan. 19, 2009, on a first come, first served basis. At present, California residents and active duty military and their dependents still pay only $20 per unit enrollment fee for classes at Cerro Coso Community College.

Sierra Club Social
Everyone is welcome to the Sierra Club Refreshments and Social at the new Crowley Lake Community Center, with  refreshments and social at 6:30 p.m. and the program at 7. Join in for a presentation of “Archaeology and Cultural Resource Management on the Inyo National Forest and Beyond” by Mike Hilton, Acting Heritage Program Manager, Inyo National Forest. Join other women at the 3rd annual Eastern Sierra Women’s Retreat today from 6-9 p.m, and tomorrow, Jan. 24 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church at 1100 W. Line St. in Bishop. The retreat will focus on Women in the Bible. The main speaker will be Carolyn Custis James, author of the book, “Lost Women of the Bible.” There is a fee for the retreat. Norman Clyde Exhibit
The Norman Clyde exhibit, “The Pack with Legs,” will be displayed at the Eastern California Museum from March 21, 2009 until Fall 2009. The exhibit will review well-known aspects of Clyde’s life and will also delve into lesser-known events that shaped the rugged mountaineer. “The pack with legs” is how Clyde has been described, a testament to his ability to traverse all types of terrain with an 80-pound pack. The museum is located at 155 N. Grant Street in Independence, and is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekends and weekdays.
