The Big Trees Fire, which ignited Tuesday afternoon in Bishop Creek Canyon due to a lightning strike, is now fully contained, U.S. Forest Service Fire Information Officer John Louth said. The fire burned a total of 100 acres and closed the Big Trees and Bitterbrush campgrounds, prompting the evacuation of between 50 and 75 campers. Both campgrounds reopened Thursday morning and firefighters were able to fully contain the blaze by 6 p.m. Thursday evening. “Crews will remain on the fire, putting out hot spots, for at least a couple days,” Louth said. There were no injuries or structures threatened in the blaze. Photo by Stan Conger
