Special to The Inyo Register 5-29-2008
Laws Railroad Museum is continuing its summer-long anniversary celebration with a hotly anticipated concert later next month. Acclaimed Western musicians Dave Stamey and Fiddlin’ Pete have been tapped to perform at Laws on June 21 as the museum marks the 125th anniversary of the first train arriving at the Bishop depot.
Tickets for the upcoming Saturday benefit concert are on sale now – and expected to go fast. They can be purchased at Laws Railroad Museum or Inyo Council for the Arts. Gates for the celebration will open at 5 p.m. Link Stanley’s famous barbecue sandwiches will be available and the Bishop Sunrise Rotary will be selling water and ice-cold sodas. This is an alcohol- and smoke-free event. Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite concert chairs or blankets as seating will be limited. Stamey and Fiddlin’ Pete will take the stage at 7 p.m. According to Laws, both men are seasoned entertainers expected to give performances residents and visitors will not want to miss. Stamey has been bucked off and stomped by many horses, stepped on by mules and dragged around branding pens by angry cattle of various sizes. He’s ridden in the rain, in the snow, in the rain some more, in pretty nasty heat, and in feedlot pens where the air was thick and decidedly fragrant. He’s even wrangled dudes. He’s an entertainer now. He finds he prefers this. He’s been awarded the Male Performer of the Year by the Western Music Association, is a three-time nominee for Songwriter of the Year, and is rapidly becoming one of the most popular Western entertainers working today. Some of the folks Stamey has played for include: The Autry Museum of Western Heritage; The Elko Cowboy Poetry Gathering; The Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival; The Live Oak Festival; The Strawberry Folk Festival; Michael Martin Murphy’s WestFest; The Nashville Extravaganza; The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association; and The Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering. Fiddlin’ Pete, a resident of Bishop and generous community supporter, has been playing his own brand of high-energy, traditionally based Western Folk music for more than 30 years – picking the mandolin or guitar, signing orginal compositions or traditional favorites and, of course, sawing the fiddle. Fiddlin’ Pete has performed in concerts in communities all across the United States. It was Pete’s love of the West and the people living here that led him to settle on the western rim of the Great Basin. Fiddlin’ Pete has become a popular entertainer throughout California and Nevada, playing at festivals, county fairs, ranch gatherings and for the outfitters who pack stock into the Sierra Nevada wilderness.v
