In one of its last tune-ups before Desert Mountain League play begins, the Lone Pine volleyball team won the Bronze Bracket Championship at the 21-team California City Tournament this weekend.
The Lady Eagles struggled against three tough teams in pool play Friday, going 0-2-1.
Lone Pine faced Santa Clarita Christian in its first match and lost, 18-25, in both games. The Lady Cardinals went on to take first in the Silver Bracket.
In the Lady Eaglesâ second match, they played Desert, who placed third in the Gold Bracket and beat Lone Pine 25-4 and 21-25.
Lone Pine started to get back on track in the final game of pool play as the Lady Eagles tied Eastside of Lancaster, winning the first game, 25-21, and losing the second game, 18-25. Eastside finished fifth in the Gold Bracket.
Once the Lady Eagles moved on to Bronze Bracket play, they were dominant, winning all three of their matches by two-game sweeps.
âDuring Fridayâs pool play the Lady Eagles just could not get any momentum and struggled with team chemistry, however that was all put behind them on Saturday as Lone Pine swept through its three opponents to finish strong,â said Lone Pine coach Mel Joseph.
Lone Pineâs first opponent was DML foe Mojave, whom the Lady Eagles beat in dominating fashion, 25-12 and 25-13.
Lone Pine went up against Academy for Career Experience in the second game of the playoffs and won, 25-11 and 25-12.
In the championship game, the Lady Eagles took on DML opponent Silver Valley and easily won game one, 25-18. It took Lone Pine an extra point to beat the Lady Trojans, 28-26.
Lone Pine had 97 percent serving with 47 aces. Leading Lone Pine in serving was Nicole Tweedy, who went 50-51 with 6 aces. Tweedy also led the team in kills with 18; Ruth Serna added 17. Veronica Carreon led the team in digs with 57 and Ariana Luque led the team in assists with 36.
The Lady Eagles had solid play off the bench from Hellen Ahumada, Nancy Niepagen and Rachel Martin, Joseph said.
Lone Pine will be in action today as they travel to Kern Valley.
