Golfers began arriving at the Bishop Country Club early Sunday morning (don’t tell their preachers) for the BUHS benefit golf tournament, kicking off at 8 a.m.
The first six holes were played as a scramble, with play continuing from the location of the best shot.
The middle six holes involved alternating shots, with the next golfer on the team either benefitting from the prowess of his or her teammate, or suffering the consequences of a shot gone awry.

Twenty-seven miles into the High Sierra 50, I’m staring at the ground for what turns out to be the final spew shot of a hurling hat trick, watching what I had hoped would be revitalizing calories ingested at the previous aid station make an emergency esophageal exit. Several thoughts are chasing each other around my head with a tenacity matched only by the two guys red-lining my engine: my good friend Phil Kiddoo’s declaration a few days before the race; the undeniable import of a certain name on the 50-mile entrant list; a comment that was added (all in good fun of course) to a friend’s race number; and, of most immediate concern, is my race over? It was a perfect day for a slow-pitch softball tournament on May 4 at the Millpond Recreation Area.
There were some good teams and some great competition with a total of nine teams, which included six Bishop teams, one Big Pine team and two from Ridgecrest.
The games went all day long and were followed by the playoffs between the top four teams. Two teams from Ridgecrest and two teams from Bishop made the cut.
