The new soccer fields at Bishop City Park are already being used by AYSO and will be used by Bishop Union High School and Bishop Youth Football. Photo by Kellie Caparula By Kellie Caparula Sports Editor 8-26-2010 After two years of hard work, the outdated tennis courts at the Bishop City Park have been transformed into soccer and football fields that are already being used by young athletes. The fields that are currently being used by Bishop AYSO came into being after the Bishop City Council wanted something done with the land. With the help of the Parks and Recreation Department, the council decided the best use of the property would be fields, said City of Bishop Community Services Director Keith Caldwell.

This meet was attended by approximately 295 swimmers representing 13 teams from northern Nevada and north central California. The Stingrays hit their peak at the championship meet by achieving new personal best times in their events, setting 15 new team records and bringing home an individual first place high-point award. Claire Jellison had a stellar meet. At the end of the three-day competition she had posted seven new team records in the 11- to 12-year-old girls division, including the 100-yard freestyle, the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke, 50 and 100 butterfly and the 100 individual medley. She missed breaking an eighth record in the 50 freestyle by 1/100th of a second. Jellison also brought home first place individual high-point in a field of 38 swimmers.

Sports Staff 8-5-2010 Six new team records were shattered and two swimmers took first place when the Bishop Swim Team hit the water July 23-25 at the “Come Up for Air” short course meet in Tahoe. The Bishop Stingrays Swim Team had a successful meet in South Lake Tahoe, returning home with two first-place individual high point awards. These went to Brooke Winzenread for 6 and under and Anamaria Sanchez for 17 and over. High point awards represent individual accumulated finishing points earned during the meet. For example, finishes are scored first through eighth place as 9, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and a cumulative tally is kept during the meet. The new Stingray team records were set by Melodie Aust in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle the 200 backstroke for 13- to 14-year-old girls and by Claire Jellison for 11- to 12-year-old girls in the 50 and 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley (a combination of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle). Coach Melanie Beard and Assistant Coach Phyllis Meneses were pleased to see the dedication swimmers put into practice paying off at this high-altitude meet. In addition to high point awards, some swimmers deserve special recognition for dropping more than 10 seconds on their events: Melodie Aust dropped 12.5 seconds on her 400 individual medley and 11.3 seconds on her 500 freestyle; Brooke Winzenread dropped 17.7 seconds on her 100 freestyle; Quinn Quesenberry lost 12.0 seconds on her 500 freestyle; Jordan Winzenread dropped 17 seconds on her 100 individual medley; Abby Ball dropped 22.3 seconds on her 50 backstroke; and Tanner Van Tassell lost 21.8 seconds on his 100 breaststroke. The Tahoe swim competition was attended by more than 360 swimmers representing 26 teams. The next competition for the Stingrays will take place this weekend at the High Country League Championship Meet in Minden, Nev. The Bishop Stingrays would like to thank the City of Bishop and all their sponsors for their continued support.
