A high, lofted cross from the right side of the field, that didn’t look threatening at first, led to a header that halted the Bishop boys soccer team’s run at a CIF championship, Tuesday.
The header came in sudden-death overtime at Santa Clara of Oxnard during the semifinals of the CIF playoffs, and gave the Saints the 3-2 win over the Broncos.
“From my vantage point I could see it all unfolding,” Bishop Boys Soccer Head Coach John McGurke said of the Saints’ game-winning goal. “You could see all the hardwork the kids put in, all the practices, all the runs down the canals in the ice and snow, going to hell in a handbasket.”
Despite losing in overtime, the Broncos controlled most of the game and they were confident going into the match, McGurke said.
Bishop started off the first two minutes of the game sluggish and had to adjust to a hostile crowd that was very close to the field.
But the Broncos settled in and David Torres scored at the 10-minute mark, giving Bishop a 1-0 lead.

After being rescheduled three times for inclement weather, the Bishop snowboard team finally competed in its last regular season race of its season, Monday.
There were 25 girl racers and 22 boy racers, less than the usual amount, because some of the Southern California competitors did not make the trip.
Twelve shredders from Bishop hit the race course.
On the girls side, Christine Holt placed fourth overall in the giant slalom and slalom. Nikki Lanshaw and Jocelyn Crockett also had top 12 finishes in both races among the divisional racers. Lanshaw was eighth in both races and Crockett was 12th in both races.
Holt, Lanshaw and Crockett also finished first, second and third, respectively, among the Lady Broncos racers.
Haley Pennington, Kelsey Nikolaus and Angela Bell also placed high for Bishop, finishing the race 15th, 16th and 17th, respectively.
The boys also had racers place high. Trevor Taylor had two top three finishes on the day, taking second overall in the slalom and third overall in the giant slalom.
Taylor was closely followed in the giant slalom by Arden Wagoner, who finished in fourth, a fraction of a second behind Taylor.
Nic Hilton and Jon Barbieri came in third and fourth respectively for Bishop in the giant slalom.
Chris Boyd and Ethan Casteel crossed the finish line for the Broncos in both races.
Bishop’s top three racers in both events from the boys and girls teams will head to Shasta Mountain for the State Finals on Wednesday, March 10. These spots have not yet been determined for the Broncos.

Over Presidents’ Weekend, the 40th Annual All Indian Basketball Tournament was held with great success.  The community enjoyed a weekend filled with terrific action from both the Men’s and Women’s tournaments.
Teams from Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Washington and throughout California represented tribes locally and as far away as Florida.
Friday evening, Karissa Stone was crowned Tournament Queen to reign over the weekend event.  The committee would like to give a big congratulations and special thanks to Stone and her fellow contestants, Secena Marrujo, Tssiuvuu Dewey and Shilby Andreas, for all their hard work.
These young ladies contributed more than $11,000 in ticket sales to support the contest and tournament.  Thanks to our community members who purchased tickets.
The big winners of our raffle were:  James Hernandez (46” flat screen TV), Laura Torres (iPod Touch), Tssiuvuu Dewey (Pendleton Blanket).  Thank you to The Toggery (Pendleton Blanket), Whiskey Creek (gift certificate), Heaven Sent, owner: Kathy Chandler (gift certificate) for the donation of raffle prizes.
The Women’s Tournament was a special added attraction this year and huge success mainly to the time and effort from coordinator, Lisa Manuelito, and her family.  Many thanks for their continued dedication to our female hoopsters. Six teams participated and we are looking forward to many more at next year’s annual tournament.
