Broncos fall to Sharks

May 20, 2013

The Bishop Broncos fell to the Malibu Sharks, the number two ranked baseball team in CIF Division 6.
Bishop made the drive down Thursday, knowing they were the underdog. The good news, though the players may not have thought so on the long drive back from the coast, was the score: 6-10. The Broncos did Bishop proud, staying in the game despite a 1-8 deficit going into the fifth inning.
Malibu retired its pitcher in the fifth, then had to sit through the final three innings wondering if the decision was wise as the Broncos methodically chipped away at the Sharks’ lead.

The Lone Pine Golden Eagles Track and Field team finished its season on a high note as the athletes reached the medal podium three times at the Desert Mountain League Finals, held at Antelope Valley High School the first week in May.
Competing against nine teams, Lone Pine’s Alec Garcia took first place in the 400-meter sprint, qualifying for the CIF championship prelims.

Valley softball season ends in CIF round one

May 17, 2013

The Bishop Lady Broncos softball team fell, 3-13, to the Shadow Hills Knights Thursday afternoon in the first round of CIF Division 6 playoffs.
“Unfortunately the score does not reflect what a good game it was,” said coach Stacy Van Nest. “We came ready to play but were out-hit and had some defensive errors. But we never gave up. The game was not out of reach until the bottom of the sixth. I’m proud of every girl on this team for an outstanding season.”

BombFest tourney rocks Millpond

May 17, 2013

The sixth annual Bomb-Fest Slow Pitch Softball Tournament played out last weekend at Millpond with the men’s teams battling it out on Saturday, followed by the coed teams on Sunday.
A lot of the names and faces were familiar, with Sweetwater, Reds and Mad Batters among the seven men’s teams competing for the tournament championship.
The champions of both the men’s and coed divisions, however, were teams from Northern California: Deaf Row, men’s champion, and Judoknome, coed champ.
Both teams, as well as one additional coed contender, were made up of hearing-impaired players.

Broncos’ bats batter the bugs

April 29, 2013

That the Bishop Broncos baseball team beat the Desert Scorpions Friday afternoon at Edwards Air Force Base is not much of a surprise. That they beat them 20-1 is significant. The resurrection of the Broncos’ bats at home against Rosamond last Tuesday was no fluke. The Bishop bats are back.
And, they’ll get another good workout at California City this afternoon before hosting the two High Desert League teams that handed Bishop back-to-back road losses two weeks ago.

Lady Broncos rally with 14-4 win over Desert

April 29, 2013

The Bishop Lady Broncos softball team came back from its loss to the undefeated Rosamond Roadrunners, demolishing the Desert Scorpions on the road, 14-4, Friday.
“The girls did well under hot conditions and varying field positions,” said coach Stacy Van Nest. “We still continue to work hard to diminish defensive errors.”
The Broncos travel to Cal City this afternoon, then host Frazier Mountain, Friday, and Kern Valley, Tuesday. Bishop is 5-1 in High Desert League, 11-7 overall.

Bishop JVs make it a clean sweep

April 29, 2013

The Bishop Broncos JV baseball and Lady Broncos softball squads demolished the Desert Scorpions Friday with 11-7 and 2-0 wins, respectively.
“We’re on the right track for another perfect High Desert League record,” said baseball coach Chris Walston. “We’ve got a week until we play Frazier at home Friday which will allow us to get all the kinks out.”
Daniel Olsen, Zack De Leo and Alex Armitage all got their chance on the mound. “All three threw well, especially with the plate umpire’s low strike zone,” Walston said. “They all adapted well.”

Bishop softball team drops first HDL game

April 24, 2013

Where was Wily Coyote when the Bishop Lady Broncos needed him?
Tied with the Rosamond Roadrunners softball team for first place in the High Desert League, the 4-0 Broncos fell victim to untimely errors and solid Roadrunner pitching with their 1-5 loss Tuesday afternoon on home field. What they could have used were a few sticks of dynamite or a piece of Acme heavy equipment to disrupt a very strong Rosamond team.

Broncos JV round-up

April 24, 2013

The Bishop Broncos junior varsity baseball team ran rings around the Rosamond Roadrunners at home Tuesday. The 10-0 win maintains the Broncos perfect league season.
“The boys are getting the proper work in at practice and it shows,” said coach Chris Walston. “I couldn’t be happier with how they’re playing.”
Bronco Thomas Montoya pitched four and two-thirds innings with 11 strikeouts and 1 walk. Alex Armitage came in in the bottom of the fourth to finish out the game with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Lady Broncos beat Kern Valley

April 22, 2013

Kern Valley has been in the Bishop softball team’s crosshairs since, probably, forever.
Friday afternoon at Lake Isabella, the Lady Broncos scored that long-awaited hit, taking down the Broncs, 3-1 to stay perfect in High Desert League play, tied 4-0 with Rosamond.
That tie will be broken this afternoon as Bishop hosts the Lady Roadrunners at City Park. First pitch: 3:15 p.m.
“We had great pitching,” said coach Stacy Van Nest. “We out hit the Broncs and played solid defense. I am so proud of our team for their great effort.”
