Eagles fight Muckers to the bitter end

September 9, 2013

The Lone Pine Eagles and head football coach John Kane learned a lot about the team in Tonopah, Nev. last Friday.
They learned they could play hard for nearly four hours.
They figured out the younger players could step up when two of the seniors were sidelined with injuries.
They now know they’ve got an offensive line to be reckoned with.
OK, the Eagles fell to the Tonopah Muckers, 65-45, in an epic game that was prolonged in the final minutes by penalty calls by meticulous referees. But those bright spots Kane saw in the team’s season opening loss were amplified in game two.

Derby does it again

September 6, 2013

Last Sunday night, the Tri-County Fairgrounds main arena was not the place to be if you were a telephone pole. Drivers at this year’s Destruction Derby, the climax of the 2013 Fair, showed no respect for the barriers that defined the crash zone. The poles were sent flying, powered over, used as a wedge for a spectacular near roll-over, served as a fulcrum to trap cars and generally abused. During the Powder Puff heat, Trica Weatherford blasted sideways over the poles, circled the track to re-enter at the west end and went on to win the heat.

Broncos’ JV football team beats Heralds, soundly

September 6, 2013

The Bishop Broncos’ football squad looks to maintain its phenomenal run of big games, taking the Whittier Christian Heralds apart with a 41-6 win.
“Overall this was a solid game to start the season,” said coach Arnie Palu. “Several sophomores have not missed a workout or practice since closing out the 2012 season. The freshmen have come on board following the sophomores leadership. As a staff we are blessed to coach this very dedicated group that is seeing their hard work and disciple pay off on the field.”

Broncos’ inexperience hurts team in season opener

September 4, 2013

When a team loses its season opener, the initial response is to look at the what-ifs. What if Whittier Christian kicker, Derek Bush, hadn’t made 4 field goals, and the score would have been 29-20 instead of 41-20, a much more palatable points spread. There are probably a dozen more “what-ifs” to be analyzed, but it’s all fairly pointless. The Bishop Broncos lost to the very strong, seasoned Heralds Friday night.

Silver lining behind Lone Pine Eagles’ loss

September 4, 2013

Change some of the names and numbers and the Lone Pine Golden Eagles season opener against the Mineral County Serpents would sound a whole lot like the Broncos football opener against the Heralds. The Eagles fell 56-30 to the Serpents, but there is cause for hope in south county.

July 26, 2013

West Bishop and High Sierra Containers, seeds one and eight, respectively, kicked off the City Softball League’s Men’s Division Wednesday. Containers put up a good fight but West Bishop dominated the game with a 15-3 win.
