Flashy Piner wins the Derby

May 19, 2014

Steve Coburn moved with his family to Big Pine in the 1960s around the age of 7. He still has family here, his sister Wahnema Coburn, and roots in the little community, people who still remember him. But as of May 3, he and his horse, California Chrome, have become the buzz of the town.

Bronco bats weren’t exactly blazing, but Bishop still gets the win

May 1, 2014

The Bishop Broncos took down the Frazier Falcons for the third time this season in their home turf match up Monday afternoon.
The game was a make-up for a game scheduled for Friday, but bad weather kept the Falcons at home. Monday’s game was delayed due to a Frazier bus breakdown.
The Falcons’ were last year’s High Desert League baseball champions but lost players to graduation; 2014 is the team’s rebuilding year. Bishop coach Tim Reid predicts a strong Falcon rivalry over the coming years. The Broncos were exposed to some of that potential on Monday but still got the 5-3 win in seven.

Broncos trample Falcons, again

May 1, 2014

Bishop’s Lady Broncos softball squad had to wait over an hour to start the second game in its series with the Frazier Mountain Falcons Monday afternoon. The Falcon teams had to be rescued from Coso Junction where they were stranded following a bus breakdown.
This season’s history between the two teams has been decidedly one-sided, but the Falcons weren’t ready to roll over and play dead in this final season contest.

Broncos start new year right

January 3, 2014

After a two-week layoff, the Bishop Lady Broncos picked up where they left off in December with a big win over El Capitan High School of Lakeside at the San Diego Wolverine Shootout, Thursday. The Div. 3 Vaqueros fell to Bishop, 55-40.
Sophomore Maria Jimenez had a breakout game putting up 25 points. “All the girls contributed to the victory,” said coach Brian Pennington. “It was a great way to start the new year.”
Tournament action continued yesterday with games scheduled with the Div. 4 Templeton Eagles, currently 8-2, and the Div. 2 Ramona Bulldogs with a 7-2 record.

Broncos nearly sweep Serpents

December 11, 2013

The Bishop Broncos basketball team’s record went to 6-2 with a 61-54 win over the visiting Mineral County Serpents Tuesday night.
The game wasn’t as tight as the score reflects; Bishop was the stronger of the two teams from the tip-off. But, like the Lady Broncos’ game, coach Ben Arcularius opted to give his bench varsity playing time and build up the depth of the Broncos squad in preparation for league action.
The Serpents got the tip-off but Andrea Musumeci swept in for the steal and Bishop was the first with points on the board.

Bishop beats Huskies

December 11, 2013

Bishop’s Lady Broncos soccer team stayed perfect for the season with a 3-1 win over the Mammoth Lady Huskies at home last Friday.
“It was a little bit one-sided,” said co-coach Cathy McKinley. “We really should have put more balls in the back of the net. But, we played hard as a team and, for the most part, kept our heads in the game.”
Bishop/Mammoth soccer games are always lively and this one was no exception. McKinley was appreciative of the fact Bronco boosters were a “great positive crowd.”

Eagles win one, lose one at KV

December 2, 2013

The Lone Pine Golden Eagles basketball teams got their first test against the Kern Valley Broncs last Tuesday, Nov. 26.
The Eagles pulled out a 60-56 win; the Lady Eagles fell, 58-21.
“We were a little cold in the first half,” said Eagles coach Scott Kemp. Kern led by 4 at the half, but the Eagles came back behind impressive offensive rebounds and put-backs by Brad Greene.
Kemp acknowledged that the Broncs have “a couple of good shooters who made some amazing baskets.” But, when a team only has one shot at the basket, it’s tough to win the game.

Lady Broncos open season against LP

December 2, 2013

This year’s Bishop Lady Broncos basketball team will make its debut tonight in a home game against the Lone Pine Lady Golden Eagles.
The basketball squad had a landmark year in 2012-13, going deep into the CIF playoffs before losing in the third round. The mental strength of the team was evident in Bishop’s 51-50 win over Bishop Diego.

Lone Pine Golden Eagles ready for a strong 2013-14 season

November 20, 2013

Scott Kemp is a happy man.
The Lone Pine basketball coach was probably described as “happy” at this time last year. He had a troupe of freshmen, all more than 6 feet tall, a couple of juniors with speed and ability and the veteran senior Michael Cappello who went on to claim a Desert Mountain League MVP spot. The Golden Eagles went deep into CIF playoffs, finally falling in the quarterfinals to the eventual division champion, Rio Hondo Hares.
