November 11, 2010

The Big Pine Warriors topped their season with a win over the Tigers and the Hi-Lo League championship Saturday afternoon at Lee Vining.
With the score 10-23 in favor of the Tigers at the half, this was not your typical Big Pine get-out-in-front-early rout. The Warriors waited until the second half to rack up the points, for a final score of 49-37.
“What else could we ask for,” said coach Mark Tillemans, “to win the title on the last game of the season.”

The Rosamond Road-runners didn’t live up to their mascot’s reputation Friday night at Schwab Field. The Bishop Broncos, in the role of Wile E. Coyote, dropped crate-loads of dynamite on their little heads. There was no triumphant “beep beep” to be heard, all night.
The Broncos won 44-0, stayed unbeaten in league play and added one more game to the win column.

November 11, 2010

The Desert Mountain League finale between Lone Pine and Mammoth lived up to its billing on Thursday. The Lady Eagles took five games to maintain a perfect season record.
Lone Pine ends the regular season 14-0 in league and 23-3 overall.
It was standing-room-only at the Lone Pine gym. The bleachers erupted in “Go Eagles,” “Go Huskies” chants that could have been heard on top of Mt. Whitney.
With a 3-0 sweep of the Huskies in mid-October, the Eagles were surprised by a 9-5 Mammoth team intent on being their season spoiler.

Scorpions sting Lady Broncos

October 21, 2010

Despite a hard-fought match, the Bishop High Lady Broncos volleyball team fell in straight sets to the Desert Scorpions Tuesday.
The Broncos’ ball control, serving and aggression at the net would have defeated a lesser team, but the Scorpions’ brick wall at the net was the deciding factor.
“We played hard, we played strong,” said coach Sheri Sonke. “I’m proud of the effort, this was our best game as a team yet.”
Bishop got off to a strong start in Game 1. The teams were blow for blow until the Scorpions turned on their after-burners, pulling away to the 15-25 finish.

Also invited to participate, but not compete, were Mam-moth High; Mammoth Middle School and Home St. Middle School running two-mile courses.
“We’re very pleased with the runners’ steady improvement,” said coach Jeff Perry. “This victory was needed to keep us in reach of the CIF preliminaries,” added coach Tracy Lawrence.

October 18, 2010

A determined Boron Bobcats volleyball team came to Lone Pine Thursday afternoon, out for Eagle blood. It didn’t happen.
The Eagles and Bobcats traded games through nearly two hours of gruelling play, but Lone Pine polished off the tie-breaker, 15-13 and remains undefeated in the top spot in Desert Mountain League play.
“We usually go five games against Boron,” said coach Mel Joseph. “They have a good program and great defensive instincts.
“Boron was scrappy and did not let too many balls hit the floor. They were aggressive from the service line.”
