Hoops update for valley schools

December 3, 2012

The past few days have been painfully quiet in terms of Owens Valley high school sports.
The Bishop Broncos’ match-up with the Mojave Mustangs, scheduled for this past Friday, was cancelled when high winds closed U.S. 395 to high-profile vehicles, which included the Mustangs’ bus.
The balance of area athletes were on the road honing their skills in tournament play.

Golden Eagles start season with a bang

November 21, 2012

If you’re Lone Pine High and coming into the basketball season off an OK previous year, and you’re facing Kern Valley Broncs – a bigger school, more competitive league, better record – realistically, you just hope for a decent showing.
The Golden Eagles did that Tuesday night, and then some.
The boys team came within 4 points of a win, at 59-63. Charging back from a weak third quarter, Eagles starters Michael Cappello and Brad Greene fouled out with four minutes on the game clock. Lone Pine held on but had lost its edge under the net.

Lady Eagles lose, 23-37

Bishop competes at CIF championships

November 21, 2012

The Bishop Union High School tennis team sent four Lady Broncos to the Ford Southern Section CIF Individual Champion-ships held in Claremont on Nov. 19.
Together the girls were able to collect a total of 12 games. “The competition is very tough when at this level,” said coach Patty Cummings. “There have been times when we have not won any games so I was extremely impressed with how determined these four girls were this year.”
The doubles team of Katie Tanksley and Tessa Wright lost in two sets – 3-6, 0-6 – against the number one doubles team from Yucca Valley

Lady Broncos face Burros

November 21, 2012

Bishop’s Lady Broncos basketball team kicked off its 2012-13 season on the road against the tough Division 3A Burroughs Burros of Ridgecrest.
The Broncos lost 41-51but started strong in the first quarter. Tamia Shoshone, Brooke Callahan and Shiloh Smith led the scoring effort.
Katelyn Lent dropped in 7 points in the second quarter with Callahan and Smith contributing 2 each. The Broncos defense was worn down by the more than ample subs from the Burroughs bench.
Although the Broncos out-scored the Burros in the second half, they were just out-manned by the home team bench.

Golden Eagles preview

November 20, 2012

Scott Kemp, Lone Pine’s boys basketball coach, has only one returning starter, three guys up from last year’s JV and four freshmen. So why is he smiling?
First, the senior is Michael Cappello, last year’s go-to guy and top-scorer. Alec Garcia is coming up from JV and bringing his running back speed. Greg Greene, at 6-foot, 2-inches, and Kelby Hykes join him on the 2012 varsity squad.
