Lone Pine Eagles batter Lucerne Valley Mustangs

April 20, 2011

The Lone Pine Lady Golden Eagles softball squad hasn’t had a stellar year. The core of Eagles athletes who killed in volleyball with an undefeated league season, were spoilers right through to the semi-finals in basketball playoffs, but spring has not been kind to them.
Some of their mojo came back Saturday morning when the Eagles beat the Lucerne Valley Mustangs decisively at 19-13.

Lady Broncos go 10 innings against Roadrunners

April 18, 2011

The match-up between the Bishop Lady Broncos softball squad and the Rosamond Lady Roadrunners was a 10-inning epic played out at home Friday afternoon.
Tied 9-9 at the end of seven innings, it took three more to determine the winner. The Roadrunners pulled ahead in the 10th for a 10-14 win.
“The girls played hard,” said coach Stacy Van Nest. “They never gave up. The score and our league record (0-3) do not reflect all that our girls have accomplished. They played two ranked teams this week and challenged both.”

Bishop goes 3-0 in HDL with win over Rosamond

April 18, 2011

The Bishop Broncos beat the Rosamond Roadrunners by a score of 3-1 Friday.
No, it wasn’t a soccer game, it was baseball in what amounted to a defensive battle. Broncos Doug Watterson and Tanner Kruse won that battle by a margin not reflected in the score, combining for 15 strikeouts against Rosamond’s Matt Franco’s three.
The win catapults Bishop ahead of Rosamond for the top High Desert League spot with a 3-0 record in league, 11-2 overall.

The Big Pine Lady Warriors softball team dropped the first game against the Trona Tornados 8-14 Friday, then came back to avenge the loss with a 26-7 rout.
“We should have won both games,” said coach Bob Church. “We gave up too many bases on balls combined with defensive errors.”
Big Pine came back in the second game with a scoring drive in the bottom of the second inning to secure the second-game win.

BHS track quickens the pace

April 11, 2011

Track is a sport of personal bests and incremental improvement, with success measured in fractions of a second.
Despite Bishop’s loss to Rosamond, April 1, both the boys and girls teams have shown that incremental improvement in the three weeks since the season opener at California City.
The Broncos boys team had their share of event winners.
Tim McMullen took first in hurdles in 18.48 seconds. The team of McMullen, Ryan Davis, Trevor Beck and Tim Pejsa won the 4x100 relay.

Lady Broncos 5-5 in pre-league after loss to Burroughs

March 28, 2011

In an effort to get as many games under the Lady Broncos’ belts before the High Desert League softball matches start April 5, Broncos coach Stacy Van Nest contacted Burroughs to set up a game for last Friday.
The outcome was valuable experience but a 3-11 loss to the tough Ridgecrest team.
“We put the ball in play,” said Van Nest, “but just needed to string more hits together and be more solid on defense.”
The game went a full seven innings. Burroughs held Bishop to one run through five innings.

Bishop Broncos drop games to Burroughs

March 28, 2011

Murphy’s Law could be applied to the Bishop Broncos’ match-up with the Burroughs Burros Saturday. With the exception of a few moments of great Broncos baseball, everything that could go wrong … you know the rest.
Too many Broncos stranded on base, too many errors, too many walks, but coach Tim Reid found the silver lining in the 8-5 loss. “I was proud of the way the team battled,” said Reid. “We shouldn’t have even been in the game,” he said in reference to the tough Burros, a team that had leveled Rosamond 20-4 in a pre-league game March 22.

Christian Hernandez, representing the Bishop soccer team in the All-Star CIF senior game, scored the only goal for the Div. 6/7 squad as they took on the Div. 5 All Stars.
Hernandez’s finish was a beautifully placed header from the penalty spot over the keeper late in the first half. The Div. 5 team ended up winning 3-1 but Hernandez played well in his last game as a high school student.
