Bishop drops season opener

September 12, 2011

The Bishop Broncos started a tough pre-league football season with a huge bull’s eyes on their jerseys. Who doesn’t want to knock off the CIF Southern Section Division Champions?
The only problem: The Broncos of 2011 are young and relatively inexperienced. That showed in Bishop’s 7-42 loss Saturday to the number one ranked Division 12 Sierra Canyon Trailblazers. The schedule doesn’t get any easier. In the coming weeks, the Broncos face Chadwick, a team Bishop knocked out of the CIF playoffs 49-20, and Rim of the World in the Broncos’ first home game, Sept. 23.

Lone Pine Eagles muck up Tonopah, stay undefeated

September 12, 2011

The Lone Pine Golden Eagles 8-man football squad went 2-0 Friday night in an edge-of-your-seat contest against the Tonopah Muckers.
The Eagles who struggled through a rough 2010 season now stand alone as the one undefeated Owens Valley team early this season.
Lone Pine’s opener was a decisive 42-6 romp over the young, inexperienced Mineral County Serpents. But, nobody could describe the Muckers game as a romp; it was a tough, back-and-forth contest that the Eagles refused to lose, despite a questionable call late in the game.

We’re on the eve of Destruction

August 24, 2011

The Tri-County Fair’s Destruction Derby looks like anger management gone very wrong, or the San Diego Freeway at rush hour. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference.
Buckled hoods, accordioned trunks, bumpers dangling by thin membranes, steam spewing from fractured radiators; it’s all great fun and the major fundraiser for the Bishop Volunteer Fire Department for the last 35 years.

Fishing Report

August 19, 2011

SOUTH LAKE
The bite remained steady this week following a 1,200-lb. stocking by the Dept. of Fish and Game, but overall things have slowed down a bit.
Big fish are being seen and and hooked but very few were landed.
All three inlets have tons of fish but fishing pressure has them a little spooky. Folks are doing best on mini-jigs, Powerworms and nightcrawlers fished under a bobber.
Remember folks, do not use weight or a swivel with mini-jigs – just tie them straight to your 2-lb. or 4-lb. test line.

JJ Davis softball tourney a success

August 17, 2011

The Second Annual Jerry “JJ” Davis Memorial One-Pitch Softball Tournament played out last weekend with the Dream Catchers taking the championship in the final game Sunday afternoon.
The Dream Catchers, sponsored by Chris Holt of Hi Country Market of Big Pine, beat the Jokers 6-5 after taking out the Jacksons, the BS’ers and Team Meat. The Jokers faced down the Redtails, Swing Men and One Hit at a Time to secure a spot in the final round.
Twelve teams in all competed in the two-day tournament. Proceeds from the event go to Davis’ three children.
