Bishop competes at CIF championships

November 21, 2012

The Bishop Union High School tennis team sent four Lady Broncos to the Ford Southern Section CIF Individual Champion-ships held in Claremont on Nov. 19.
Together the girls were able to collect a total of 12 games. “The competition is very tough when at this level,” said coach Patty Cummings. “There have been times when we have not won any games so I was extremely impressed with how determined these four girls were this year.”
The doubles team of Katie Tanksley and Tessa Wright lost in two sets – 3-6, 0-6 – against the number one doubles team from Yucca Valley

Golden Eagles preview

November 20, 2012

Scott Kemp, Lone Pine’s boys basketball coach, has only one returning starter, three guys up from last year’s JV and four freshmen. So why is he smiling?
First, the senior is Michael Cappello, last year’s go-to guy and top-scorer. Alec Garcia is coming up from JV and bringing his running back speed. Greg Greene, at 6-foot, 2-inches, and Kelby Hykes join him on the 2012 varsity squad.

Second playoff game, by the numbers

November 14, 2012

The Bishop Broncos take on the Salesian Mustangs in round two of the CIF football playoffs this Friday on the road. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on KBOV.
So, the question of the hour: can the Broncos win? The answer is one of those frustratingly coach-like responses: the Salesian Mustangs can be beaten. Bishop has the talent, the coaching, every element necessary to come away with an upset over a school seeded just one spot higher in the CIF Northeast Division.

Broncos beat KV in 1-second wonder

October 29, 2012

Epic. The game of the century. The stuff of which movies are made.
However you describe what amounted to the Bishop Broncos’ league championship football game against the Kern Valley Broncs, it was, incontestably, one really exciting game. For the few Owens Valley residents who haven’t already heard: Bishop was behind by 3 points on Kern’s 9 yard line with one second on the game clock; a Kyle Batchelder pass sailed into the hands of Curran Simpson and Bishop won by 3 at 34-31.
