Broncos hoop action

The Bishop Broncos opened their run at the Sutro Classic basketball tournament in Dayton, Nev. with a win Thursday night over the host Dayton Dust Devils, 54-50.
Bishop was down by 9 at halftime, but came back with a vengeance in the second.
Dayton’s defense focused heavily on Cy Scott opening opportunities for other players to step up.
Kyle Miller caught fire from the outside, giving the Broncos the spark and momentum in the second half.
Roman Amisone took advantage in the paint and off offensive rebounds.

Soccer update

December 7, 2012

Coming off a solid weekend performance at the Palmdale Classic tournament, the Bishop Broncos soccer team took on LaSalle last night in the team’s only home game of the pre-season. The Broncos lost their first two games at the Classic last Friday to Knight (2-0) and Quartz Hill (2-1) but rallied with two wins to reach the finals of the consolation bracket, losing again to Quartz Hill (2-1). Bishop will be looking to the leadership of seniors Danny Lopez, Angel Aranzubia (5, above) and Alberto Olvera (27, above) who have all started every Bronco game since they were freshmen.

Home Street wins RV tourney

Round Valley Elementary School held the 37th Annual Ken Baker Basketball Tournament Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Bishop High School’s Gus Klekas Gymnasium.
Competing against eight teams from Inyo and Mono counties, the Home Street Middle School boys team came away with the championship, followed by Mammoth Middle School in second and Big Pine taking third place.
Other teams included a second Home Street team, two teams from Round Valley, one from Lo-Inyo School and a team from Bridgeport.

Broncos stomp MC Serpents

December 5, 2012

After a non-start to their basketball season, the Bishop Broncos are off and running with wins over Mineral County on the road Tuesday.
Bishop’s home-opener against the Mojave Mustangs, scheduled for last Friday, was cancelled when U.S. 395 was closed to high-profile vehicles due to high winds.
The Lady Broncos are now 1-1, following a loss to the Div. 3A Burroughs Burros and a 51-35 win against the Serpents.
The Broncos beat the Serpents 49-42, a solid win for a young team.

Lone Pine Eagles ready for DML

The Lone Pine Golden Eagles have survived pre-league basketball and head into Desert Mountain League action tomorrow at Silver Valley.
The Lady Eagles are picking up their offense; the Eagles need some fine-tuning but both teams show a lot of promise.

After a strong showing at the Hawthorne Tournament last weekend, the Lone Pine Golden Eagles basketball squad headed to Ridgecrest for a rematch against the Immanuel Christian Crusaders Tuesday.

Hoops update for valley schools

The past few days have been painfully quiet in terms of Owens Valley high school sports.
The Bishop Broncos’ match-up with the Mojave Mustangs, scheduled for this past Friday, was cancelled when high winds closed U.S. 395 to high-profile vehicles, which included the Mustangs’ bus.
The balance of area athletes were on the road honing their skills in tournament play.

Warriors split games with Huskies

Huskies, 52-25
The Big Pine Lady Warriors clobbered the Mammoth Huskies on home court Tuesday night, skating to a decisive 52-25 win.
Junior Sheyanne Wilder led the scoring with 43 points, nearly twice the total Husky effort. The Warriors’ defense was aggressive; Wilder shared big rebound numbers with Kaity Barlow at 20 and 15 respectively.

Lady Broncos prevail over Lobos

November 26, 2012

The Bishop Broncos soccer squads started pre-league play Monday, Nov. 19 at Littlerock, north of Palmdale, with mixed results.
The Lady Broncos JV trounced the Lobos, 7-0; the varsity won, 1-0.
The Broncos had a rough start with the JV squad dropping the game 1-3 and the varsity doing the same 0-4.
Varsity coach John McGurke lost six starters from a strong 2011-12 team and is still in the process of reconfiguring his 2012-13 squad.
