Lowe and behold: international act coming to Owens Valley stage

As its first offering of the 2010-11 season, the Bishop Community Concert Association is bringing a veritable entertainment whirlwind to the local stage.
Bringing both tremendous talent and audience appeal, the nine-member, Branson, Mo.-based Lowe family is set to perform a unique blend of music, theater and dance at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Bishop Union High School Dorothy Joseph Auditorium.
While excited to be kicking off its concert season, the BCCA is particularly pleased to be doing so with The Lowe Family.

Local artist helping raise funds for Altrusa

Returning to the Tri-County Fairgrounds for the 12th consecutive year, Altrusa International of the Eastern Sierra’s Art Show and Sale is offering patrons more than one way to take home works by local artists.
“Below the Dam,” an original framed watercolor painting by 2009 featured artist Pat Crowther, will be raffled off during the annual event, being held Saturday and Sunday inside the fairgrounds’ Floriculture Building.
Crowther has generously donated the painting to help Altrusa raise funds for its various literacy-related community service projects.

Thomas taking center stage at Altrusa show

From the California State University system, to the studios of Disney’s Featured Animation Division, to the base of the Sierra Nevada, Maryann Thomas has spent her life nurturing a tremendous talent and passion for art.
She’ll be sharing her acclaimed watercolor works – many of them inspired by travels to far-flung locales or the views in her own backyard – with residents and visitors when Altrusa International of the Eastern Sierra highlights Thomas as the featured artist at this year’s Art Show and Sale on Oct. 2-3.

Joe Henley bringing 'new roots' to Millpond

Jo Henley is not a person. Rather, Joe Henley is a Boston roots-rock band formed by longtime musical collaborators Andy Campolieto and Ben Lee, known for their unique blend of rock, folk, country and bluegrass that their fans affectionately refer to as “new roots.”  
Inspired by everything from old-timey music to modern arena rock, from Hank Williams to Bruce Springsteen, Campolieto’s and Lee’s mutual love of all forms of American music shines through in Joe Henley. 

Latin rhythms to spice up Millpond festival

hey came to the U.S. from cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, Argentina, with a mixture of Latin rhythms, performed with Spanish guitars, a Cuban Tres, Peruvian cajn (box-drum) and harmonizing vocals.
Vivacious and infectious, the sound of Los Pinguos has claimed fans worldwide, from their hometown to the streets of Los Angeles, and now here to Bishop’s own 19th Annual Millpond Music Festival, Sept. 17-19.

Local photographer presents panoramic views of Sierra

Local photographer Paul Fretheim will present stunning views of the Sierra Nevada backcountry using unique, 360-degree, “virtual reality” photography techniques during a presentation at the Eastern California Museum in Independence.
The event is free and open to the public, beginning at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at the Eastern California Museum, 155 N. Grant. St., Independence (three blocks west of the historic courthouse).
