Massive search ends with recovery effort

One of the largest search and rescue operations in Inyo County history came to an end this week with the discovery of hiker John Likely’s body.
The discovery – made early Thursday evening during the last planned reconnaissance flight of the day – brought a sad conclusion to a massive, five-day search involving almost 100 experts and professionals from across California.
It was obviously not the conclusion hoped for by either Likely’s family or the searchers themselves, who refused to consider their mission a recovery rather than a rescue operation.

Summer is official on June 21, but if you asked the high country lakes it got here a week or two ago. Over the past week I have been hiking high passes and Piute and Bishop pass lakes are all ice-free, at last. The fish in these high country lakes are hungry and offering up some real consistent fishing.

Domingo “Mingo” Sanchez Parra passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2014, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Mingo was the fourth of 10 children born to Pedro and Maria Parra on April 19, 1940 in Deming, N.M. While growing up in New Mexico, at the age of 15 he met the love of his life Cecilia Granadino. The two were married on Feb. 24, 1962. The couple had four sons while still living in New Mexico.

Stephen Dennis Rinehart of Bishop went home to his heavenly Father on May 20, 2014. Steve came into this world on Aug. 12, 1950, a miracle son born to Larry and Florence (Brock) Rinehart in San Diego.
Steve was a survivor. Born three months premature he wasn’t expected to live, but with prayers offered up by his Dad and Mom, he amazed all the doctors and nurses at the military hospital where he was born.

Margaret died June 13, 2014 at the Bishop Care Center following a long illness. She was born to Mildred and Spencer Lowden on June 14, 1931 in Redding, a fourth generation Californian. She and her family moved to Bishop in 1934, where she attended Bishop Elementary and graduated from Bishop Union High School. She also graduated from Reno Business College. She worked for Southern California Edison, Union Carbide and Continental Telephone Company. She married Daniel Young in 1953. She married Whistler (Clarence) Hurd in1972.

On May 30, Shannon (Smith) Dews left us to be with Jesus full-time, forever, whole, healed, completely filled with peace and joy.
She was born on Oct. 11, 1974 at Northern Inyo Hospital to Les and Debbie Smith. She attended Bishop schools and graduated from Bishop Union High School in 1992. After high school Shannon worked as a nanny for several families both in Washington state and in California.

What ‘needs to change’ on Inyo Nat’l. Forest?

Residents and visitors are invited to weigh in on the future of the Inyo National Forest as the Forest Service wades deeper into Forest Plan revisions this week.
A public workshop will be held from 5-8 p.m. today at Cerro Coso Community College in Bishop to discuss the Inyo’s “Need to Change” document and share their thoughts on what the Forest should look like.

Search for missing hiker continues

With the search for missing hiker John Likely entering its fourth day Wednesday, authorities were holding out hope of finding the 60-year-old New Jersey man alive.

Administration, Arcularius favor one manager for libraries, museum

Inyo County is going to explore its options for a reorganization of Museum and Library services in an effort to combine job positions to cut costs.
On Tuesday, First District Supervisor Linda Arcularius followed the lead of County Administrative Officer Kevin Carunchio and Deputy Administrator Pam Hennarty, and recommended that the county consolidate the two departments under one manager and eliminate the other management position.

1928-2014

Born June 14, 1928 in Elmhurst, Ill. 24-year Bishop resident Leonard L. Rosga passed away June 5, 2014 at Northern Inyo Hospital in Bishop. He was 85.
Leonard was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a helper at Sunday School. He was a 20-year faithful volunteer at Salvation Army in Bishop. He was also in the Illinois National Guard during World War II. He loved being outdoors, fishing and hiking, and spending time with his family.
Leonard will be greatly missed by family and friends.
