LaWanda Marie Shoshone
LaWanda was born Feb. 26, 1963 in Bishop, Calif. and passed away Sept. 6, 2011 at home in Cathedral City, Calif. at the age of 48. She was the daughter of the late Alverna M. Piper of Bishop, Calif. and the late Robert S. Saubel of Banning, Calif.
Local reaction to a Caltrans Highway Project that would bypass parts of Olancha/Cartago has been mixed, with some saying the project will make the communities safer and others claiming a bypass will kill local businesses that rely on through-traffic.
One southern Inyo County property owner is speaking out against a proposed highway project, claiming that Caltrans ignored the wishes of citizens and the local government.
The idea of a truck route in, or perhaps around, the City of Bishop has stirred the hornetâ€™s nest.
The so-far controversial notion, along with possibly adding streets to relieve downtown congestion and various street and pedestrian improvements, is part of the cityâ€™s update to its transportation blueprint and has generated many pro and con comments.
Edward ‘Ted’ Higle
Theodore Edward “Ted” Higle, a 50-year resident of the Owens Valley, passed away on Sept. 1, 2011 in Northern Inyo Hospital in Bishop, California. Born on March 28, 1939 to Ted Evert Higle and Bertha Bromley in Jamestown, Kan., Ted grew up in Montana and enlisted in the United States Navy where he served as a Navy Seal in the Korean War. He then moved to Bishop, where he was instrumental in bringing cable television to Inyo County.
Carol Walters Cole
Carol was born Sept. 18, 1934 in Lovelock, Nev. to Mona Gracey and Carl H. “Bud” Walters of Independence and passed in Reno on Sept. 1, 2011 with family members at her side. The Walters family were an old pioneer family having settled at Camp Independence in 1869, and the Gracey family arriving in Independence in the early 1900’s.
William ‘Randy’ Peters
William “Randy” Peters, 51, died Aug. 1, 2011 in Carson City, Nev. He was born in El Monte, on Dec. 10, 1959, to Sharon Diane Peters and William Robert Peters. He is survived by his wife, Sherry Peters of Bishop; sisters, Rene, Raylene, and Jennifer, all of Arizona; his stepfather, Dave Stewart of Sahuarita, Ariz.; and his father. His mother died in 2007 in Sahuarita.
Alfred E. Morgan
Alfred E. Morgan, age 89, resident of Bishop for 30 years, born Feb. 14, 1922 in Freedom, N.Y. passed away Sept. 5, 2011 in Bishop.
Marguerite (Peggy) B. Milovich
Lynn O. Newcomb
Lynn O. Newcomb, 91 years old, resident of Inyo County for one and a half years, born in Hollywood on May 21, 1920, passed away on Sept. 5, 2011 at the Bishop Care Center.
Gertrude ‘Gail’ Cooper
Born Nov. 19, 1920 in Big Pine, Gail passed away Sept. 5, 2011 at home in Bishop. She was 90 years old.
A funeral service will be at Big Pine Community United Methodist Church at 11 a.m., Sept. 10. Rev. Dr. Karen Moore will officiate. Graveside service will follow at Big Pine Cemetery.
