1954-2011

A memorial service will be held at the Oasis of Grace Church Jan. 28, 2012 for 18-year Bishop resident RaVonne Wines. More details will be forthcoming and published in the newspaper and available at the church at a later date.
Born March 2, 1954 in Aurora, Colo., RaVonne passed away Nov. 8, 2011 of breast cancer.

Maureen H. O’Brien
1926-2011

Maureen H. O’Brien went to be with her Savior on Oct. 29, 2011. She is survived by her five children, David O’Brien, Mark O’Brien, Sheila Anderson, Michele Enkenrode and Sean O’Brien, together with their spouses, and her 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Maureen was an OB nurse at Northern Inyo Hospital and lived in Bishop 34 years.

Bishop XC teams head to Mt. SAC

The Bishop Broncos’ Cross Country girls team came in first, the boys team second, in High Desert League competition held Nov. 2 at Desert High.
Broncos runners will be competing today in the CIF Preliminaries at Mt. San Antonio College.
The Lady Broncos were undefeated for the season, claiming league championship ahead of Rosamond and Kern Valley.
On the boys’ side, Rosamond took first, Bishop second followed by Kern Valley, Desert and Cal City.
“I’m proud of these atheltes for the effort they have put in this season and for who they are as people,” said head coach Jeff Perry.

Broncos repeat as HDL Champs

Playing on their opponents’ turf, the Bishop Broncos scorched the Desert Scorpions Thursday night, 61-20, to officially claim the High Desert League Championship for the second straight year. Bishop is seeded number one in the Northeast Division with a 5-0 league record, 9-1 overall.
Desert brought all the weapons in their arsenal to the game, but most of them backfired. The Scorpions, tied with Kern, Frazier and Cal City at 2-2 going into the final league game, had to play spoiler to the Broncos to have a shot at making the playoffs.

Though not under formal military command until the early 1900s, women have played an active role in the armed forces since the American Revolution, serving alongside their male counterparts in fighting for country and freedom.
Today, an estimated 1.5 million women – 214,000 of them active – are serving their country among the five branches of the U.S. military, according to the Department of Defense, accounting for 14.5 percent of the nation’s military service personnel.
The number of female veterans in the U.S. is estimated at 1.2 million.

Community recovery effort reaches second year

A full year has passed since determined community members announced their intention to make a difference in the lives of residents recovering from addiction, and in the community as a whole.

Mammoth anticipates big opening weekend

Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is kicking off its 2011-12 season this weekend with the help of a fall storm that dropped seven inches of snow last week.
Mammoth was set to turn on the lifts at 8:30 a.m. today in advance of four days of festivities and events for early-season skiers and boarders to celebrate the opening of the season.
The resort planned several industry film debuts from the DC snowboard team, live music daily on the mountain and “swag giveaways.”

1946-2011

Marjorie Patterson was born in Schurz, Nev. on Dec. 21, 1946 to Hank and Margaret Patterson. Marge was the 11th of 12 children. She passed away on Nov. 7, 2011 at Dolano Regional Hospital.
Marge was a very happy, giving lady and loved life. She loved playing handgames, fishing and being around her family and friends. She could always make people laugh.

Sage to Summit announces kinder, gentler Race Series

Only a month to go before Sage to Summit begins its annual Winter Race Series at Millpond.
The first of the five-race series starts Saturday, Dec. 10. According to race organizers, the routes will return to courses from the first two years of the series. Apparently, the more challenging courses used in 2010 brought mixed reviews.
This year, Sage to Summit is teaming up with the Bishop High School Cross Country Team and coach Jeff Perry. The Winter Race series will be a fundraiser for the team.
