Irvin R. Miller
1920-2011

Born July 15, 1920, life-long Independence resident Irvin R. Miller passed away Nov. 2, 2011 at Northern Inyo Hospital in Bishop.
Irvin grew up in Inyo County and loved to pack into the Sierra. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Irvin was also a World War II veteran, serving as a mechanic on early jet aircraft.
 In his later years, one of his biggest sources of fun was traveling to Bishop to enjoy his friends at the Paiute Palace Casino.

Harold D. Lawson

Harold D. Lawson
1925-2011

Harold D. Lawson was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on March 10, 1925. He passed peacefully on Nov. 3, 2011.
Hal joined the Marine Corps in 1946 and served during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
In 1969, he married Rose Major who preceded him in death in 1993 after 24 years of marriage.

Cost-of-living hikes coming for Social Security recipients

Social Security and Supplemental Security Income recipients will be receiving their first cost-of-living-increase in three years. Recipients will begin seeing their first income increases in December and January, the first they’ve seen since 2009.
The granting of COLAs, based on a complicated mathematical algorithm, has been delayed due to an overall unhealthy economy.

Input sought on Keeler Dunes dust control plan

Officials with the Bureau of Land Management and Great Basin Unified Air Pollution Control District are teaming up to tackle an Environmental Impact Report that may lead to dust control measures on the Keeler Dunes.
According to Great Basin Air Pollution Control Officer Ted Schade, the district is seeking input from regulatory agencies and other interested parties regarding the scope and intent of information that should be included in the EIR.

AmeriGas announces national merger

There will soon be only two propane providers in Inyo County as AmeriGas has made an offer to acquire Heritage Operating, L.P. and Titan Energy Partners, L.P. the parent companies of Turner Propane and other smaller local providers such as Lone Pine Propane.
The $2.9 billion deal will secure AmeriGas as the leading propane provider in the nation, according to AmeriGas.

Funeral services for 51-year Lone Pine resident Marion Amolee “Amie” Weatherly will be held at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 5, 2011 at Mt. Whitney Baptist Church in Lone Pine. Pastor Terry Randolph will officiate. Interment will be at the Mt. Whitney Cemetery.
Born June 18, 1929 in Hartford, Mo., Marion died Nov. 2, 2011 at Southern Inyo Hospital in Lone Pine. She was 82.

Frank W. Sutton

Frank W. Sutton
1927-2011

Frank W. Sutton passed away Oct. 18, 2011 at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.
Frank was born in San Diego on Sept. 16, 1927. Frank retired from Southern California Edison and moved to Bishop in 1995. Bishop was a much beloved place to be for Frank as he enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and exploring all around Inyo County. He was also a student of Inyo County history.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7 at the Brune Mortuary Chapel in Bishop for 83-year-old Bishop resident Lawrence Kinney. Stan Summers of House of Mercy will officiate. Interment will be at Sunland Cemetery in Bishop. A Cry Dance shall commence at dusk on Sunday, Nov. 6 at the Kinney residence at 495 Pa Me Ln., Bishop.
Born in Bishop on Aug. 10, 1928, Lawrence died Oct. 31, 2011 at his home. He was 83.

Broncos are HDL champs, unofficially

The Bishop Broncos scored their fourth shutout in a row, 49-0, Friday night against the Rosamond Roadrunners, unofficially clinching the High Desert League championship.
With four of the six-school league cannibalizing each other into 2-2 seasons, the win secured the championship for the Broncos with one game remaining, against the Desert Scorpions, in the regular season.
Coach Bill Egan may be the only person in Bishop not speculating on the post-season playoffs. He’s still waiting until after the Desert game, Thursday, Nov. 10.

Golden Eagles: league champions

The Lone Pine Golden Eagles are the Hi-Lo League football champions, finishing regular season with an 8-0 record.
The Golden Eagles take on the Lancaster Baptist Eagles this Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. in round one of the playoffs. Lancaster Baptist is an at-large team from the tough Heritage League.
Lone Pine is ranked seventh in CIF 8-Man Div. 1; Lancaster Baptist, ninth.
