Tribal members at odds as two elections held

Local tribal members are waiting to hear if the Bureau of Indian Affairs will certify an election from last week.
According to tribal members, friction between two factions of the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe, which has members spread throughout the country, has created a situation where two separate tribal elections are held each year.
In the past, the BIA has refused to certify either elections, telling tribal members that they must hold one consolidated election.

Stout appointed to state judicial committee

The seemingly tireless efforts of Superior Court Judge Dean Stout to build a better community have caught the attention of a statewide committee.
Currently the presiding judge of the Inyo County Juvenile Court, Stout has been appointed co-chair for the Judicial Council Advisory Committee on Family and Juvenile Law.
He was named “Juvenile Court Judge of the Year” by the Juvenile Court Judges Association in 2006.

County school board to explore unification option

Before making any final decisions regarding the future of Owens Valley School, local leaders have decided to take a close look at the possibility of consolidating the Independence school district with another local school.
Owens Valley is facing lapsation, or closure, due to declining enrollment.
The Inyo County Committee on School District Organization, comprised of members of the Inyo County Board of Education, decided Tuesday to perform a unification study that will answer questions about staffing and funding a unified district.

Sheriff compiling emergency call database for Inyo

Local law enforcement is trying to contact every household in the county to be sure it has the means to notify all residents of disasters or emergencies in their communities.
The Inyo County Sheriff’s Department tested its CodeRED Emergency Notification System Nov. 4, and is now asking any resident who did not receive an automated call to contact the Sheriff’s Department and have their phone number added to the system.

Fruitcakes returning to Indy

With the advent of the holiday season comes the approach of the internationally acclaimed Independence Fruitcake Festival.
In addition to hosting and showcasing dozens of homemade fruitcakes and eggnog selections, organizers have added a new spin to this year’s event, scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19 in the American Legion Hall in Independence.
Complementing the 2010 theme, “America’s Got Fruitcake” theme, organizers are inviting all Fruitcake Festival attendees to showcase their talents.

Three arrested for recent rash of suspicious fires

A series of small brush fires in the Bishop area over the weekend and past couple weeks have been attributed to arson. According to the Inyo County Sheriff’s Department, three residents linked to the crimes were taken into custody Sunday.
The suspects charged with alleged arson and conspiracy to commit arson are Thomas Stone, 18, Jared Manga, 18, and one 16-year-old juvenile, all three from Bishop. Bail for Stone and Manga has been set at $250,000.
