From its humble and passionate beginnings in 1969, the annual Manzanar Pilgrimage has become more than just a way to honor those who were interned at the camp. It has also become a way to honor those who continue to fight for reparations and civil rights, and those who are committed to preserving the memory of the World War II Japanese internment camps that serve as an example of how fragile civil rights in America are.

The match-up between the Bishop Lady Broncos softball squad and the Rosamond Lady Roadrunners was a 10-inning epic played out at home Friday afternoon.
Tied 9-9 at the end of seven innings, it took three more to determine the winner. The Roadrunners pulled ahead in the 10th for a 10-14 win.
“The girls played hard,†said coach Stacy Van Nest. “They never gave up. The score and our league record (0-3) do not reflect all that our girls have accomplished. They played two ranked teams this week and challenged both.â€

The Bishop Broncos beat the Rosamond Roadrunners by a score of 3-1 Friday.
No, it wasn’t a soccer game, it was baseball in what amounted to a defensive battle. Broncos Doug Watterson and Tanner Kruse won that battle by a margin not reflected in the score, combining for 15 strikeouts against Rosamond’s Matt Franco’s three.
The win catapults Bishop ahead of Rosamond for the top High Desert League spot with a 3-0 record in league, 11-2 overall.

Inyo officials are preparing to decide how to deal with a $600,000 deficit for county integrated waste management.
Inyo County Integrated Waste hosted three public meetings in February, one each in Bishop, Independence and Lone Pine, to discuss the possibility of raising fees or reducing hours at local landfills to help close the budget gap. New life and hope are the themes this year in Independence, where committed residents, working together with Inyo-Mono Advocates for Community Action, Pioneer Memorial United Methodist Church, and Owens Valley Unified School District, have come together to create an oasis in the midst of the desert – or in this case, a garden in the midst of what has been in past years a parking lot and a baseball field.

A zoning move taken by the City of Bishop earlier this week sparked concern from residents over the potential opening of homeless shelters in their neighborhoods.
As mandated by state law, the city must allow zoning for emergency shelters within the city limits. Although there are no plans to develop any such facility, citizens expressed trepidation that the city was giving a greenlight to the development of homeless shelters.

2000-2011
A viewing and funeral mass was held in Rockford, Ill, on April 1 and April 2 for Rockford resident Jorge Luis Esparza. The family will hold a memorial and be releasing balloons in his memory at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 16 at the back of the Bishop City Park. Family and friends who wish to attend and send condolences to the family in Rockford are invited to attend.
Charlotte Suzanne (Ward) Bryant
1940-2011
A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 30 at the East Line Street Cemetery in Bishop for Charlotte Suzanne (Ward) Bryant. A reception will follow at the Bryant residence in Bishop.
Born July 23, 1940 in Battle Creek, Mich. to Laurence Alton Ward and Gertrude May (Hix) Ward, Charlotte died unexpectedly on March 31, 2011.
Charlotte was the youngest of four children.

Local authorities have positively identified one of three sets of human remains located in southeast Inyo County in the past several months.
Deputy Coroner Jeff Mullenhour announced last week that remains located in the Badwater region of Death Valley are those of Carson City resident Norman Cox.
Cox was reported missing in August of 2010 after his family received a suicide note posted from Death Valley.
Local law enforcement conducted a search of the Death Valley area in August of that year, but was unable to locate any signs of Cox and eventually called off the search.

Bishop police officers arrested an Arizona man on felony drug charges last week after following up on reports of someone smoking marijuana in public.
Rex Alan Hornbaker, 56, was arrested on Monday, April 4 for possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sale, possession of a controlled substance and transportation of a controlled substance.
Police officers made a traffic stop on Hornbaker’s vehicle at about 6:30 p.m. after a concerned resident reported witnessing a man smoking marijuana near Joseph’s Bi-Rite Market on Main Street.
