Over the course of two days, residents and local healthcare providers got a dose of reality about the prescription narcotic drug addiction epidemic facing the nation – and that – includes Eastern Sierra communities. 

State attempting double taxation?

Local leaders are protesting what they are calling double taxation of citizens as state legislators implement an annual fee on homeowners to help pay for fire prevention efforts on state-managed lands.
Last week, Governor Jerry Brown approved a controversial bill that will allow Calfire to collect a $150 fee from homeowners in state fire responsibility areas.
Bishop Fire Chief Ray Seguine said most of Inyo and Mono counties are considered State Responsibility Areas, and will be subject to the tax. The only areas that are not SRAs are incorporated cities and towns.

Catch of the Week: Sophia and Ronald Santos from Orange County caught a stringer of fish with corn Powerbait and nightcrawlers on the North Shore.
Best Location to Fish: The best locations to fish right now are the Six Colors, South Shore, Inlet, Beach Area, Jetty, Lake, North Shore and Convict Creek.
Other Locations to Try: “Windy Point” (picnic area south shore), The Inlet, Hangman’s Tree, Outlet, Handicap Pier and Convict Creek.

Volleyball Referees Needed
Referees are needed for the 2012 high school girls volleyball season covering schools from Lee Vining to Lone Pine.
Training will be provided. Referees will be paid for working games and for travel. The season runs from late August to early November. Those interested should contact Jan Rhoades at (760) 873-8225.

Lone Pine Lady Eagle Volleyball begins the 2012-13 season Monday, Aug. 20 with coach Mel Joseph’s traditional “Mel Week.”

Four hikers rescued

Inyo County search crews located the third missing hiker in as many weeks, and were able to extract the man from the backcountry severely injured, but alive.
Shyam Das, 68, of Saratoga was reported missing Monday, Aug. 6 after leaving his hiking group the day before and heading off to summit Mt. Whitney alone. Search and Rescue personnel found Das Tuesday in the area of Mirror Lake.

The patience of canines who have been panting for their own hang-out where they can romp, wade, fetch and learn to play well with others, is finally being rewarded.
The Bishop Dog Park, a 1.5-acre puppy playground bordered by East Yaney, Bruce and Spruce streets, is ceremonially opening its gates this weekend to local and traveling pet owners.
