John Loydd Ericson, Jr.
1990-2013

Born June 31, 1990, 15-year Big Pine resident John Loydd Ericson, Jr., “John-John,” passed away Jan. 31, 2013 in Bishop.
John-John will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was a devoted and extremely loving father to his son Noah, whom was the light of his life. He lived an active life, loving the outdoors: fishing, hiking and all sports. He gave nothing less than 110 percent in all that he did, and was always there to lend a helping hand whenever needed.

Emergency plans being prepared at local schools

In the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shootings in Newtown, Conn. two months ago, Inyo County school administrators and law enforcement have improved their comfort level in regards to school safety through planned changes to school campuses, a review of existing emergency plans, training and the on-going communication initiated at a school safety meeting held at the Inyo County Office of Education, Jan. 15.
The following is the second in a two-part series covering recent improvements to school safety.

Inyo students recite for honors at Arts Council

Eight young poetry recitalists competed for a chance to represent Inyo County at the state and national levels for a chance to win prestige and substantial monetary prizes.
Bishop, Lone Pine and Owens Valley high school students delved deeply into their intellectual, emotional and public speaking repertoires this past Tuesday at the third annual Inyo County Poetry Out Loud Finals.
Inyo Council of the Arts School Arts Coordinator Liz McAteer emceed the POL event.

$80,000 awarded to community events

Inyo County will be dividing $80,000 among 13 different programs and 7 agencies through the county-funded Community Project Sponsorship Grant program.
Local leaders awarded funds to the Lone Pine, Death Valley and Bishop chambers of commerce, Playhouse 395, the Bishop Museum and Historical Society, the Friends of the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery and the Bishop Mural Society.

Elizabeth (Beth) Strelneck, 76, resident off Lee Vining and June Lake for 48 years, born in Hanston, Kan. on April 5, 1936, passed away on Jan. 30, 2013 at Bishop Care Center.
She is survived by her husband, Martin Strelneck of Lee Vining; sons, Eric Strelneck of Oakland and David Strelneck of Bath, Maine; granddaughters, Isabel Strelneck and Rose Strelneck of Bath Maine; sister, Alice Lazzerini of Turlock; and brothers, James Coiner of Covina, Charles Coiner of Alturas and Melvin Coiner of Baldwin Park.

Pauline Peters, 85, resident of Bishop for 58 years, born in Chicago, Ill. on Nov. 9, 1927, passed away on Jan. 29, 2013 on her return home from Loma Linda Hospital.
Polly and Tom moved to Bishop in 1955 from Reseda, Calif. with their family. She worked at Northern Inyo Hospital for 35 years as a nurse then as the Medical Records Librarian until her retirement in 1989. Since her retirement, she enjoyed spending her time with family and friends. Polly and Tom have been married for 64 years.

Mary Ann “Sunshine” Billingsley-Moore passed Jan. 14, 2013 at the age of 56 at the Hospice of Kitsap from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). She loved all who came to visit her in her last days and hours.
Mary Ann was born on July 3, 1956 to Colonel (Cricket) and Martha Billingsley of Chico. Her parents later moved to Chalfant Valley.

David Roy McLaughlin
1931-2013

David Roy McLaughlin was born on Feb. 12, 1931 and passed away Feb. 4, 2013.
He was born in Sagle, a small town about seven miles south of Sandpoint, Idaho. David was the second son of David Elbert McLaughlin and Cora Jane Meadors. It was a large family, the father having six children from a previous marriage and the mother having three children (one deceased) from a previous marriage. Three more children would be born to this couple, making a total of fourteen children.
