NIH begins effort to find a new administrator

Northern Inyo Hospital is in the midst of executing a succession plan, using national and international recruiting agencies, to find suitable replacement for its chief executive officer.
NIH Chief Executive Officer/Chief Financial Officer John Halfen plans to retire and it is incumbent on the hospital’s Board of Directors to find his replacement – or replacements.

Security upgrade coming for Juvenile Hall

County leaders, on Tuesday, approved a $112,000 contract that they hope will improve security at the Inyo County Juvenile Detention Center in Independence.
Chief Probation Officer Jeff Thomson said a new security system at the juvenile hall “is very well needed.”
“The juvenile hall was built in 1995 and we’ve had the same security system since then,” Thomson said. “When the equipment went in it was top of the line, but it’s time to make some adjustments.”

L.A. City Council declares 2013 ‘Year of the Aqueduct’

Statewide this year, residents, organizations and public entities are recognizing the 100-year anniversary of the completion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, the engineering feat that transports the Owens Valley’s water to Los Angeles.
In addition to a number of projects and events taking place locally, City of L.A. leaders have declared 2013 “The Year of the Los Angeles Aqueduct.”
The declaration came in the form of a Proclamation approved by the L.A. City Council last Friday. It was presented by Councilmember Jose Huizar along with Councilmember Tom LaBonge.

Feedback on Warren St. project fueling design phase

Faced with many utilitarian and aesthetic choices, a volunteer citizens group continues to help shape the Warren Street Improvement project.
It is hoped that a community-collaborative design effort to renovate the Warren Street corridor will enhance the area visually and economically.

Digital 395, LORP contract, senior programs up for consideration

County leaders will hold a special meeting at 9 a.m. today to discuss progress on the Digital 395 project, the county snow removal policy and other county business.
The board will meet in the County Administrative Center in Independence and the meeting is open to the public. Traditionally, the board only meets three times in a five-Tuesday month by cancelling its last two meetings of the month. The board did not meet Tuesday, Jan. 1, taking New Year’s Day as a holiday. To make up for that meeting, county leaders will be meeting today.

In an effort to heal internal wounds, Northern Inyo Hospital acknowledged its error, reinstated an employee and began plans for long-term personnel policy revisions.

Worst flu season in years has arrived

Influenza is hitting the nation harder than it did at this point last year and it could be peaking in some parts of the country. Though the flu has not reached its peak in California, local health officials are telling residents to be prepared and get their vaccines. 

City Council narrows options for filling fifth seat

Local leaders are still trying to decide how to fill a vacancy on the Bishop City Council created by Jeff Griffiths’s resignation late last year.
Griffiths vacated his seat at the Dec. 10 meeting, the last one held in 2012, in order to take up his new position in January as the newly-elected Second District County Supervisor. There are approximately 21 months left of Griffiths’ council term, his second.
