Ellis back on Bishop City Council

The empty seat on Bishop City Council, vacated by newly elected Inyo County Auditor Dave Stottlemyre, has been filled.
The council voted unanimously Tuesday to appoint former council member Jim Ellis to the seat over fellow candidate and former appointee Keith Glidewell. Both Ellis and Glidewell received support for appointment during public comment.
Candidates for the seat expressed their interest for consideration through letters sent to City Hall following the resignation of Stottlemyre. Ellis and Glidewell were the only two residents who submitted letters of interest.

1952-2014

Born in Lone Pine on July 7, 1952, Rodney Ernest Keener passed suddenly on Dec 22, 2014 at home in Lone Pine.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Everett Keener; sons, Travis, Ethan, Jonathan and Harrison Keener; his mother, Betty Keener; and sister, Kristy Keener.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leon Keener; and son, Douglas Keener.
Rod had many friends and many stories to tell. He was a welder, mechanic, cowboy and carpenter – a man of many talents, always ready to lend a hand.

Mono County praises Gorge ruling

Mono County District Attorney Tim Kendall is applauding this month’s court decision that requires the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to provide enough water in the Owens River Gorge to sustain local fisheries.
The ruling (which was covered in the Saturday, Jan. 3 article, “Owens Gorge issue settled”) was signed Jan. 7, about 24 years after proceedings were initiated by Mono County in 1991.

A busy 2015 ahead for Bishop Chamber

Less than two weeks into the new year, the Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce has completed its calendar of events for everything from high-profile events like the Blake Jones Trout Derby and Fishing Opener press reception, to regular business like Chamber Board meetings.
It’s events like those, and the organizational meetings that make them happen, that has put Bishop and the Eastern Sierra on the map for vacationers and other visitors each year.

County campsite fees increased

County leaders voted last week to adjust the fees charged at county-operated campsites, boat launches, storage facilities and parks. This is the first time those fees have been adjusted in 13 years.
At Tuesday’s Inyo County Board of Supervisors meeting, Senior Deputy County Administrator Pam Foster explained that Inyo County has two conflicting ordinances on the books that outline how to handle fees charged at county-operated recreation areas.

Award-winning taxidermist leaving Eastern Sierra

Local taxidermy legend Tony Davidson, of Davidson Taxidermy, has decided to say goodbye to the Eastern Sierra after 28 years.
Davidson and his wife, Sharon, will be heading back to his home state of Louisiana in the near future to open up a slightly different business than the one they’ve operated in Inyo County for so long.
It was 1986 when Davidson first went into business as a taxidermist in Ridgecrest. As a lifelong avid hunter and fisherman, Davidson was just 11 years old when he realized his calling.
