The Big Pine Warriors advance to the second round of CIF playoffs with a 34-20 win over the Calvary Baptist Cougars Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars played tough, meeting the Warriors TD for TD. With a 21-20 fourth-quarter score, Ryan Carringtonâs interception turned the tide, kicking the Warriors into high gear.
âIâm very pleased with the outcome,â said coach Mark Tilleman. âThe kids put themselves in this position (in the playoffs) and they came through.â

The Big Pine Warriors topped their season with a win over the Tigers and the Hi-Lo League championship Saturday afternoon at Lee Vining.
With the score 10-23 in favor of the Tigers at the half, this was not your typical Big Pine get-out-in-front-early rout. The Warriors waited until the second half to rack up the points, for a final score of 49-37.
âWhat else could we ask for,â said coach Mark Tillemans, âto win the title on the last game of the season.â

The Rosamond Road-runners didnât live up to their mascotâs reputation Friday night at Schwab Field. The Bishop Broncos, in the role of Wile E. Coyote, dropped crate-loads of dynamite on their little heads. There was no triumphant âbeep beepâ to be heard, all night.
The Broncos won 44-0, stayed unbeaten in league play and added one more game to the win column.
The Bishop girls cross country team took second place at High Desert League finals at California City, advancing to CIF Prelim-inaries at Mt. SAC, Nov. 13.
The boys team finished fourth, just six points behind Kern.
âTo have the girls advance to CIF Prelims is a well-deserved honor,â said coach Jeff Perry.
âOur boys gained a sizeable victory over Desert,â said Perry, âand ran very respectable times, but our competition was simply faster this year.

The Desert Mountain League finale between Lone Pine and Mammoth lived up to its billing on Thursday. The Lady Eagles took five games to maintain a perfect season record.
Lone Pine ends the regular season 14-0 in league and 23-3 overall.
It was standing-room-only at the Lone Pine gym. The bleachers erupted in âGo Eagles,â âGo Huskiesâ chants that could have been heard on top of Mt. Whitney.
With a 3-0 sweep of the Huskies in mid-October, the Eagles were surprised by a 9-5 Mammoth team intent on being their season spoiler.

Despite a hard-fought match, the Bishop High Lady Broncos volleyball team fell in straight sets to the Desert Scorpions Tuesday.
The Broncosâ ball control, serving and aggression at the net would have defeated a lesser team, but the Scorpionsâ brick wall at the net was the deciding factor.
âWe played hard, we played strong,â said coach Sheri Sonke. âIâm proud of the effort, this was our best game as a team yet.â
Bishop got off to a strong start in Game 1. The teams were blow for blow until the Scorpions turned on their after-burners, pulling away to the 15-25 finish.
With the Tungsten Hills as a backdrop, the Broncos Cross Country squads dominated the Desert Scorpions, winning in both the boys and girls three-mile races Tuesday.
Also invited to participate, but not compete, were Mam-moth High; Mammoth Middle School and Home St. Middle School running two-mile courses.
âWeâre very pleased with the runnersâ steady improvement,â said coach Jeff Perry. âThis victory was needed to keep us in reach of the CIF preliminaries,â added coach Tracy Lawrence.

A determined Boron Bobcats volleyball team came to Lone Pine Thursday afternoon, out for Eagle blood. It didnât happen.
The Eagles and Bobcats traded games through nearly two hours of gruelling play, but Lone Pine polished off the tie-breaker, 15-13 and remains undefeated in the top spot in Desert Mountain League play.
âWe usually go five games against Boron,â said coach Mel Joseph. âThey have a good program and great defensive instincts.
âBoron was scrappy and did not let too many balls hit the floor. They were aggressive from the service line.â
